Ethics and War: An Introduction (Cambridge Applied Ethics), by Steven P. Lee

What are the ethical principles underpinning the idea of a just war and how should they be adapted to changing social and military circumstances? In this book, Steven P. Lee presents the basic principles of just war theory, showing how they evolved historically and how they are applied today in global relations. He examines the role of state sovereignty and individual human rights in the moral foundations of just war theory and discusses a wide range of topics including humanitarian intervention, preventive war, the moral status of civilians and enemy combatants, civil war and terrorism. He shows how just war theory relates to both pacifism and realism. Finally, he considers the future of war and the prospects for its obsolescence. His clear and wide-ranging discussion, richly illustrated with examples, will be invaluable for students and other readers interested in the ethical challenges posed by the changing nature of war.

"...this is a fine book.... it is one to read, and then keep as a reference..."
Nick Fotion, Emory University, Notre Dame Philosophical Review

"This book deserves to become a classic.... Lee draws on authors from all historical periods in his 225-item bibliography and 686 footnotes to argue for and against the questions framing each topic. His knowledge of the literature is encyclopedic.... Essential..."

Pretty good introduction to Just War Theory
By Jeffrey K. Mann
Dr. Lee has written a pretty good introduction to Just War Theory in this well-organized and clearly written work. He combines a solid introduction to the theoretical aspects of the topic with plenty of real world examples. It is written at a level appropriate for the college student who wants to learn about the ethics of war, and it would make a fine introductory textbook for a class dealing with that issue. The greatest strength of this book is the outlined structure that Lee used, helping the reader organize the material in her own mind. It is also helpful for anyone wishing to jump to (or skip) certain sections. This would also be quite useful for an instructor who could tell students, "Today we're going to look at section 2.2, 'The origins of the just war tradition.'"

What I was less impressed by was Lee's own politics entering the conversation in subtle ways. For an introduction of this nature, it seemed inappropriate, and sometimes a bit dishonest. While students might not notice the ax he has to grind, he is nonetheless doing so. There were also places where I was disappointed in his analysis. For example, on p. 22, he announces that particularistic pacifism is not "a moral view at all" because it is not "universalistic." This completely ignores approaches to ethics with a long foundation in eastern religion/philosophy as well as Roman Catholicism.

Over all, if one is looking for a good introduction to just war theory, and can remember that Lee is not the final word on the subject, I could recommend this book. I certainly benefited from reading it.

Textbook for Philosophy of War Class
By Richard Wainright
Horrible text book. I got an A in the class in spite of Steven P., Lee. Lets play a drinking game and have a shot every time Lee says Jus Ad Bellum.
