Love these Preschooler Books!

[[VIDEOID:a20ea1400a9da2967230469d6b251b07]] Billy doesn't have to be upset that he doesn't have a pretty homeschooling journal like big brother Marcus! Love this! Great for Preschoolers! Not so demanding that it will become stressful like many of the the preschool books I have, but fun, relaxed, and they will absorb the info!

I received this product at a discount in exchange for my honest review. I honestly love it and though I have no little boys, my nephew is going to really love this and he is nearing the perfect age to use it! His momma is a 1st grade teacher so I look forward to her feedback, too!

Overall great product!

I bought this for my 4 1/2 year old son as an informal introduction to math. 4 stars only because it was a bit repetitive and simpler than I was expecting. That being said, overall it was an excellent product. The quality is great. My son has greatly enjoyed using it and I believe his number recognition and connection of an amount to it's number has greatly increased while using this product. Having 5 children, it is great to find products that are able to be used independently without just feeling like busy work. Looking forward to trying more products by this author.

This is a book for boys only! My sons love the idea that their sister will not want to color there Count and Color Book. Very Beautifully decorated for boys ages 3 and up who enjoy to color. Large numbers to color and work on tracing and writing numbers a great hit in our house with mostly boys.

Later, popular additions to the cast included the brash, cynical and grumpy Captain Haddock, the bright but hearing-impaired Professor Calculus (Professeur Tournesol) and other colorful supporting characters such as the incompetent detectives Thomson and Thompson (Dupond et Dupont). Herge himself features in several of the comics as a background character; as do his assistants in some instances.
The success of the series saw the serialized strips collected into a series of albums (24 in all), spun into a successful magazine and adapted for film and theatre. The series is one of the most popular European comics of the 20th century, with translations published in over 50 languages and more than 200 million copies of the books sold to date.
The comic strip series has long been admired for its clean, expressive drawings in Herge's signature ligne claire style. Engaging, well-researched plots straddle a variety of genres: swashbuckling adventures with elements of fantasy, mysteries, political thrillers, and science fiction. The stories within the Tintin series always feature slapstick humor, accompanied in later albums by sophisticated satire, and political and cultural commentary.

About the Author
Herge (Georges Remi) was born in Brussels in 1907. Over the course of 54 years he completed 23 albums of The Adventures of Tintin series, which is now considered to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest, comics series of all time. With translations published in over 80 languages, more than 230 million copies sold worldwide and a Hollywood movie to its name, Tintin dominates the Comics and Graphic Novels chart even today. Sadly, Herge died in 1983, leaving his 24th album, Tintin and Alph-Art, unfinished, but his hero continues to be one of the most iconic characters in both adult and children's fiction.

Tintin heads to Tibet to rescue his friend Chang

Tintin and Milou were created in 1929 by Georges Remi (a.k.a. Hergé). In 1934 Hergé met a young Chinese student, Chang Chong-Chen, at which point Tintin's creator became convinced of the importance of having a soundly built storyline and getting the facts straight. In short, Hergé started taking his craft very seriously. After the Communists took over China, Hergé and Chang lost touch. In 1960 "Tintin Au Tibet" ("Tintin in Tibet") was published and it was immediately clear that this was a very personal story for Hergé, who was writing about his friendship with a friend he had not seen in decades.
Tintin has a dream about Chang, the boy he made friends with in China in "Le Lotus Bleu " ("The Blue Lotus"). Chang is lying in the snow, half buried, holding out his hands and calling to Tintin to help him. When Tintin gets a letter from Change he is surprised at the remarkable coincidence, but then he reads in the newspaper that Chang's plane has crashed in Tibet. Tintin, convinced his friend is not dead, goes off to save his friend.
There are none of the traditional villains in this rather special Tintin story in which our hero is aided only by Milu and Captain Haddock (with a brief appearance by Professor Tournesol). "Tintin Au Tibet" is a fairly straightforward rescue adventure, with the determined Tintin overcoming any and all obstacles placed in his way by man and nature. This is arguably the most poignant Tintin adventure, focusing on the power of loyalty and hope overcoming all obstacles and Hergé places a lot of obstacles in Tintin's way. I think what I like most about this story is about how Hergé keeps what are essentially a series of cliffhangers going and going but in a realistic manner, while still working in the series trademark humor with Milou and the Captain. "Tintin Au Tibet" is an atypical Tintin adventure, but that just makes it all the more special.
How did the real story end? In 1981 Hergé and Chang Chong-Chen were happily reunited.

Tintin au Tibet is one of Hergé's best books. Full of suspense, emotion, beautiful drawings and the abominable Yeti. Do read it, and, please,try to read it in French : Hergé's language is both precise and easy to understand. Enjoy !

Tintin - still the best comics after all these years!

I grew up on Tintin, which was written by a Belgian. I am part Belgian, but grew up in India, now living in the US. After reading French, Belgian, Indian, and American comic books, I can say that Tintin is still one of the best comic books out there today! The characters are very funny, especially Captain Haddock and Professor Calculus! There is adventure, there are villainous rogues, and there is a sense of having traveled to these countries and lived thru the adventure with Tintin and his faithful dog, Snowy (Milou in French). This particular story about mysterious Tibet, and the Yeti, is very touching in parts, and has all the ingredients to entertain and delight! Definitely should be part of any collector's library.

About the Author
Mauricio Flores Rios is a grandmaster from Chile. He achieved the title at eighteen, and is a regular member of Chile’s Olympic team. Mauricio combines his career as a chess player and trainer with his PhD studies in Mathematics at the University of Minnesota.

Excellent monograph on modern strategic chess

This is another sterling offering from Quality Chess. This 464-page book has been authored by a 24-year-old Chilean GM. It looks at strategic plans for white and black in the context of five "families" -- 1) d4 and ...d5, 2) Open Sicilian, 3) Benoni, 4) King's Indian, and 5) French. Each of these families is further subdivided thematically, with each theme receiving a chapter. For instance, d4 and ...d5 is divided into the isolated pawn, hanging pawns, Carlsbad formation, Caro-Kann formation, Slav formation, Stonewall formation, and Grunfeld centre. This first family alone takes up 125 pages of carefully annotated games, each with its own "lesson objective" and "final remarks." In a sense the book is like the tomes, "Mastering the Spanish" by Danny King and "Mastering the King's Indian Defence" by Bellin and Ponzetto except that it covers several structures and its coverage of each is perforce more brief.

Flores argues that books on general chess strategy only take one so far. To get to the next level of expertise it's necessary to know what motifs and other strategic elements are important for a given pawn structure.

The style and quality of annotation is reminiscent of Mihail Marin -- i.e., insightful and a perfect blend of explanation and variational analysis. Flores claims he looked at over 20,000 games to select the ones he analyses in his book. They are (virtually) all grandmaster games of the last few years (2006-2014)

As with Jon Edwards' excellent "Sacking the Citadel," this book has been written with the help of ChessBase. In this case it means 1) identifying common pawn structures, 2) using ChessBase to find the games with a given pawn structure, 3) looking for common motifs and strategies, 4) finding the games that best exemplify them, and 5) annotating those games carefully and summarising the lessons.

Target readership? Probably USCF 1800-2300 though players lower than 1800 and higher than 2300 can also expect to learn something.

This is a book of enduring worth, like the trilogy of annotated games of Judit Polgar (also published by Quality Chess). If you are serious about your chess, buy a copy. Sell the family silver, remortgage your house, "do what you gotta do" to buy the book.

My complaint is that the book is too short. It could easily have been three hundred pages longer. In particular, the section on the French -- at around 50 pages -- is woefully brief.

A great book

The previous reviewer wrote a great review, so I'll just add or emphasize a few points..Like the previous reviewer, I also view the target audience as 1800-2300 players. I also very much like the way the material is organized and presented.

I also believe that the French defense section could be significantly improved if longer. There was no discussion of the French structures that can arise from the Winawer, McCutcheon, Burn, Rubinstein variations, for example. The three French Defense structures examined include one that typically arises from the Tarrasch with e6/d5 vs d4; one from the Steinitz variation after 7. Be3 cd4; and the d4/e5 vs e6/d5 structure (whether arising from the Advance French, Advance Caro-Kann, or some other opening).

Despite this minor reservation, this is a great book, and in my opinion should be an early contender for Chess Book of the Year.

Excelent book about chess pawn structures. The best ever? probably yes!

Chess structures is an excellent book, probably the best book regarding chess structures that has been ever written (or at least that I know! I own 4, and checked some others).
The author cover all main pawn structures, and describe them clearly and in a very didactic way, keeping always clear objectives and the strategy needed for every structure.
Another thing that I like very much is the structure of the book. It is very good organized, what is also something new in this kind of books (mainly if you compare with the legendary book of Kmoch, but also with others). Definitively when you are learning, organization is always very useful to save time and don’t mix ideas.
Finally, I would like to say that last week I discovered a blog about the book (http://chess-structures.com/), yes not a blog of the author, but a blog about the book. I this blog, Mauricio Flores is including recent (or old) games where you can see how the theory of the book are applied, and how even sometimes GMs don’t find the best option!. For me, this can set a precedent chess books world.
The author don’t just write the book and get the money, but he keeps giving updates about it. Marvelous idea!
Highly recommended book and nice high value blog complement. My two cents as book of the year for this jewel.

Mixed feelings

I review this as a big fan of the Breitbart network.

My main critique of this book is that it's too brief in its rules and all rules lack specific examples. There is lots of hyperbole that paint pictures of rabid liberals that need to be engaged and shot down, very few examples. The only reference Ben uses is his appearance on Pier Morgan's show. For example, Rule #5 is "Spot Inconsistencies in the Left's Arguments." The arguments he presents are vague ideas but ultimately strawmen.

I realize that it's a $0.99 book that is only 20 pages long, so that my not be entirely fair. But to be honest, it reads as if Shapiro thought he could make a few bucks summarizing his exchange with Piers Morgan. And practically, this book is worthless. The "rules" are very brief. Shapiro is a greatly experienced journalist and media personality. These rules work because he practices them every single day. One would need to read various media sites daily and talk to liberals daily in order to be effective. This book sort of suckers people in to thinking reading 20 pages will turn them into Andrew Breitbart.

Rather than read this, I recommend going on YouTube and watching Shapiro, Breitbart, and Pollak actually debating liberals! Breitbart on Martin Bashir's show is legendary, so is Joe Pollak on O'Brien's show.

1. Walk Toward the Fire
“The left knows this is war. And they know you are the enemy. You will be castigated. You will get punched. That’s the way it will go because that’s how the left wins: through intimidation and cruelty. You have to take the punch, you have to brush it off. You have to be willing to take the punch.”

2. Hit First
“Don’t take the punch first. Hit first. Hit hard. Hit where it counts. Mike Tyson used to say, “Everybody has a plan ‘til they get punched in the mouth.” That’s exactly correct. But throwing the first punch requires game-planning. Walking through the door, you have one shot – one! – to put someone down for the count from the beginning of a debate. If done properly, any debate on a single topic can be over within the first 30 seconds.”

3. Frame Your Opponent
“I have argued that the left’s entire playbook consists of a single play: characterizing the opposition. It’s incredibly effective. And the only way to get beyond character arguments is to frame your opponent – make it toxic for your opponent to slur you. Then, hopefully, you can move the debate to more substantive territory. This is the vital first step. It is the only first step…There is no way to convince someone that you don’t hate him or her. You can convince him or her, however, that your opposition is a liar and a hater.”

4. Frame the Debate
“It’s important that you neuter those buzzwords quickly, because otherwise you will be arguing against nonsense terms that can be used against you. You can’t argue against empty terms. So don’t accept the premises of their arguments, which are largely buzzword based…It’s important that you neuter those buzzwords quickly, because otherwise you will be arguing against nonsense terms that can be used against you. 5. Spot Inconsistencies in the Left’s Argument
“The left’s arguments are chock full of inconsistencies. Internal inconsistencies — inconsistencies that are inherent to the left’s general worldview. That’s because very few people on the left will acknowledge their actual agenda, which is quite extreme. Leftists prefer to argue half-measures in which they don’t truly believe…There are almost invariably unbridgeable inconsistencies in the left’s publicly stated positions that are at war with their actual fundamental principles. Your goal is to make the left admit once and for all what they believe about policy by exposing those inconsistencies.”

6. Force Leftists to Answer Questions
“This is really just a corollary of Rule #4. Leftists are only comfortable when they are forcing you to answer questions. If they have to answer questions, they begin to scratch their heads. The questions they prefer to ask are about your character; the questions they prefer not to answer are all of them. Instead, they like to dodge issues in favor of those character arguments.”

7. Do Not Get Distracted
“You may notice when arguing with someone on the left that every time you begin to make a point, that leftist begins shouting about George W. Bush. It’s like Leftist Tourette’s Syndrome. “Why did Obama blow out the budget?” “BUUUUUUUSHHHH!!!!!” Don’t be fooled. You don’t need to follow the idiotic rabbit down into his Bushy rabbit hole…Arguing with the left is like attempting to nail jello to the wall. It’s slippery and messy and a waste of resources. You must force them to answer the question.”

8. You Don’t Have To Defend People on Your Side
“Conservatives get trapped in this gambit routinely, because they figure that the enemy of their enemy is their friend: if the left is attacking someone, he must be worth defending. But that’s not true…Don’t follow people. Follow principle.”

9. If You Don’t Know Something, Admit It
“Don’t get caught in the trap of believing you have to know everything about everything. Your opponent will undoubtedly know something you don’t. It’s fair to simply state, “I didn’t know that, but I’ll be happy to research and get back to you.” Another side-note here: don’t bring up a topic with which you aren’t passingly familiar.”

10. Let the Other Side Have Meaningless Victories
“Leftists prize faux moderation above all else; by granting them a point or two, you can convince them that you aren’t a radical right-winger at all. After all, everyone can admit both parties are terrible!…If the left engages you on immigration reform, your answer should be that you are for immigration reform. Now, how do they define immigration reform? That’s the key question. But because you’ve always granted the premise that you like the idea of immigration reform, you don’t look like a naysayer off the bat…The conversation is meaningless until you force the left to define terms. Until then, we can all agree on useless platitudes.”

11. Body Language Matters
“The Left is expert at imagistics. The right is not, because the right falsely believes that shallow imagistics can be beaten with substance. Which has worked out fabulously for every great actress who is 300 lbs. in Hollywood — all two of them who are working…Leftists prize faux moderation above all else; by granting them a point or two, you can convince them that you aren’t a radical right-winger at all. After all, everyone can admit both parties are terrible!”

not worth your money or time. it does not teach how to debate.

Doesn't really address issues that are topics of debate. Only describes how to frame arguments or debates to give you the edge and hopefully win. Does not have substantive material on policy or framework of issues and what they mean and how to defend our view on some issues that are close to republicans. I want to learn our issues in-depth and learn how to defend and even influence others, not to antagonize or cajole democrats only to look foolish when I have no factual information or data.
