I adore these books!

I think that the whole set of Beginner Books is wonderful. There is the green book, purple, blue, red. I am very fond of all of them and they give a variety of stories to enjoy. When I read my kids books, it is nice to keep the same book out for a few nights of reading. When they are older, I can use this to teach them to read without having to resort to something boring like the Dick and Jane books. I plan on collecting them all in the end.

Dr. Seuss always a Winner & book perfectly fits personality of person it was purchased for, however, make sure to check "sizes" of books listed... I was expecting a "full size" version....most likely, my own fault for not paying closer attention!!

We first received this book as a gift for our nine month old baby. Quickly this book became a staple in our household so much so that I had to reorder the book as ours in is tatters from use.

Postmodern Mythology

Though somewhat uneven throughout, John Barth's Chimera is an enjoyable and complex read, particularly for those with an interest in Ancient Mythology and Post Modern fiction. This "novel," written sometime after Giles Goat-Boy and Lost in the Funhouse, is comprised of three very loosely connected novellas, all taking post-modern slants on classic mythological stories.

"Dunyaziad" is a brief recounting of the 1001 Arabian Nights and the plight that Princess Scheherazade and her sister faced after recounting those 1001 stories to their tyrannical husbands. Don't worry if you've never read the real 1001 Nights: Barth provides enough context that you'll quickly figure out what's going on. You'll probably want to go out and read the original tales after you're done, because he does a great job of making these tales seem mysterious and intriguing.

"Perseiad" is tale of Perseus and his mid-life crisis after slaying Medusa and separating from his wife. This is definitely the best tale of the three and is very similar to Barth's earlier tales "Menelaiad" and "Anonymiad" from Lost in the Funhouse. The digressions are minimal, the plot perfectly formed (spiralic if you will), and the sense of impotency, confusion, and frustration very tangible.

"Bellerophoniad" is a self-conscious imitation of "Persiad" and probably the most difficult story of the three. It definitely has its good parts, but some of the post-modern digressions (particularly the lengthy account of characters originally found in Giles Goat-Boy, and notes from a lecture delivered on Barth's fiction itself) can really be tedious.

Once again, don't be frightened off by the copious references to mythological characters and events, even if you aren't previously familiar with them. Barth goes out of his way to bring you up to speed, even citing a passage from Robert Graves' The Greek Myths to give you a very literal account of Bellerophon's myth. All of Barth's trademark wit and complexity are here, and there is plenty of sex, violence, and humor (sometimes all three at once) to keep you entertained. If you are a new reader to Barth, you are much better off reading The Sot-Weed Factor or Lost in the Funhouse, but to those who already consider themselves devoted fans, this is a must-read.

Barth as "Ebenezum" or "A multitude of Enchantments"

Authors do not write novels with the purpose of having them labelled. Critics label novels and authors because they like to put things and people in their places.

John Barth writes novels, long or short, because he likes to. he writes them in specific styles and ways because that is what he enjoys and that is how he thinks, and that is how he writes.

The three short novels in Chimera are different in subject matter from Barth's other novels. The style is sometimes easy, sometimes cryptic and sometimes full of intellectual vanity. But that is what makes Barth.

One reads this type of work if one likes this type of work. And if the reader gets even more than he hoped to get out of reading the book, then the reader recommends it to others and sometimes writes a review.

If you like Barth, or this type of literary writing, but do not know much Greek mythology, you must read this book for fun and to expand your cultural horizons.

If you like Greek mythology, you should read this book for the perspective, the depth and the whimsy. And, who knows, you may start looking at more recent history in a different way.

If you like Gore Vidal's "histories", you may well like this book.

Finally, if you enjoyed Craig Shaw Gardner's books, maybe you will enjoy Chimera, but for different reasons.

These are not writer comparisons but reader idiosyncrasies.

Gripping, thought-provoking, humorous, generally excellent

This is one of the finest works by a fine author. Several scenes and lines from it have entered my personal mythos.
Each of the three novellas is a gem in its own way, and the trio work beautifully together. In each, the basic idea is to show a legendary figure as a real human being. We see Perseus after his glory days have passed, for example, and also meet Bellerophon who secretly feels that he has been a faker all along. But it's much more than yet another retelling of old legends.
It will make you think. It will probably also make you laugh in places and move you in others.
The wrapup is unexpected. Some will love it; some will hate it.
Do yourself a favor and read this. It's well worth the price of the paperback.

He has presented at numerous Microsoft Tech.Ed events across the United States, Australia, and Asia; written articles for Microsoft TechNet; and spent countless hours talking about IIS at other events, user group meetings, and road shows. He is currently an MCSE, MCDBA, MCTS, and holds a Masters in Business and Technology from UNSW. When he isn’t thinking about IIS, Ken can usually be found tinkering with Active Directory, Operations Manager, SQL Server, Windows Media Center, Virtual PC…

Jeff Cochran is a Senior Network Specialist for the City of Naples, Florida, and has been employed in the computer networking industry for nearly two decades. Beginning with computer bulletin boards on a Commodore 64 in the early 1980s, he has worked with nearly every method of communication via computer since. In the early 1990s, he started the first commercial ISP in Southwest Florida, using Windows NT 3.51 systems for mail, web, and FTP servers.
Jeff is married to Zina, a self-employed graphic designer, and spends his free time remodeling a 1950s home in Naples. Although most of his personal hobbies revolve around computers, he enjoys Geocaching and collecting pinball machines, and is still addicted to Age of Empires.

Scott Forsyth works for ORCS Web, Inc. as the Director of IT. ORCS Web is a Microsoft Certified Partner offering web hosting services utilizing the IIS platform for hosting of ASP.NET, SharePoint, SQL Server, Exchange and other technologies. He is a Microsoft MVP for ASP.NET, an ASP Insider and has multiple MCP certifications.
Scott is married and has two kids, Joel and Alisha, who don’t work with IIS yet but do spend countless hours on the computer. When he's not in front of a computer, Scott leads a youth group at his local church, plays the drums and enjoys playing table tennis.

Rob Baugh is the VP of IT for Anres Technologies. He has been in the IT field since 1999 and has worked with IIS the entire time. He has multiple Microsoft Certified Professional certifications.
Rob is married to Stacy and they have one daughter, Emily. His passion (when away from computers) is scuba diving, so he recently relocated to Merida, Mexico to be closer to the blue waters of the Caribbean.

Mike Everest has had an interest in computing from the time he first laid eyes on a PC at high school in 1978. He operated a series of Bulletin Board Systems throughout the 1980s while completing his undergraduate studies and experimenting with early Internet technologies.
Mike began working with web servers in the early 1990s and established the first commercial web hosting platform in his regional hometown of Geelong, Australia. Since then, specializing in Internet infrastructure, hosting services, and ISP systems, he has participated in establishing and developing no fewer than seven technology companies, sold two, and maintains an ongoing interest in three.

Great book on IIS 7 for Administrators and developers

People often ask me how I like Vista and whether I think it's better than Windows XP or not. My standard reply is that I would have switched to Windows Vista for IIS 7 alone (I also do like many other Vista features, and thus prefer Vista over XP but that's beside the point here). In my opinion, IIS 7 is in many respects a lot better than its predecessor IIS 6 which runs on Windows XP and Server 2003. Besides the many new features that IIS 7 brings, it has one big advantage over the version running on Windows XP: it allows you to create multiple web sites that can run at the same time. No more messing around with tools like IIS Admin Pro although it was extremely useful in working around the limitations of IIS on Windows XP.

But with a new release of a complex piece of software as IIS is also comes the need for more knowledge and background information of the product. This is where the Wrox book Professional IIS 7 written by Kenneth Schaefer et al proved to be very useful.

The book is primarily aimed at administrators who manage Windows server running IIS 7. However, I'd also recommend the book to developers as they'll get a firm grasp of what goes on in the web server they're developing against. As an administrator, it's useful if you can read (or better yet, write) programming code as the book contains many code examples that show you how to create, edit and manage your IIS web sites (and more) through code and command line tools. As a developer, be prepared to learn a lot about how IIS works, and how to operate it, but don't expect too much in the field of actually developing web sites that will eventually run on IIS.

The book contains 20 chapters and is split over four parts. The first four chapters deal with topics like the history of IIS and compare the way the various flavors of IIS have worked in the past and how IIS 7 works now. You'll also learn more about the IIS architecture, with important sections on application pools, worker processes and the new "integrated pipeline mode" that allows you to deeply integrate your own managed .NET code into IIS. The chapter on planning is useful in helping you to determine requirements for things like software, hardware, network, and firewalls.

The installation process of IIS 7 is pretty straightforward and you'll probably be able to install IIS 7 yourself without a lot of instructions. However, if you've never installed IIS 7 before you may appreciate the large number of screenshots from the installation process in chapter 4. To me, the added value of that chapter was in the second half of the chapter where you learn how to create IIS sites, application pools, users and how to set permissions using command line tools and .NET code. Useful as that section was, I am not sure I understand what it did there as large parts of chapter 5 and 6 are dedicated to programmatically creating IIS objects. The chapter on installation closes off with some very useful tips on shared configuration which comes in handy if you're responsible for setting up or managing web farms.

The second section of the book contains a number of chapters that deal with web site administration. You'll learn how to create new sites, application pools and many other necessary IIS objects, both through the user interface and through .NET code and command line tools like appcmd.exe. You'll also see how to use the new configuration file system that allows you to manage your IIS sites using simple XML based config files. This is also one of my favorite new IIS features as it allows you to copy IIS settings (site settings, users, permissions and more) from your development machine to a production server (or from a backup file to a restored web site for example, no more messing with metabase backups). Being a developer, I liked this section a lot. I was able to quickly create a .NET application that allows me to create brand new and consistently configured web sites on my Windows Vista machine with the press of a button; something that comes in handy with the many Dynamicweb CMS web sites I run locally. I also found the chapter on the FTP Server quite useful. Since the out-of-the-box version of the FTP Server requires a fixed naming and directory structure it's good to see all the strict requirements clearly listed. Also, the new FTP Server that can be downloaded from [...] is discussed in detail. The only thing I wish the book had included was a walkthrough of setting up a separate FTP site with a number of users accessing specific parts of the server. For example, you may want to have an FTP server unrelated to any of your web sites, (like [...]) and then grant yourself full control to the Inetpub folder, while providing access to one or more other folders for other users, preferably using non-domain accounts. While such a setup is possible and reasonable (and often extremely easy to do with commercial FTP servers), the book won't really help you figure out how to do it.

Chapter 11 and 12 show you how to extend the web server by writing your own modules using both managed and unmanaged code. If you're wanting to write integrated modules for IIS using all of its new features, this will definitely whet your appetite, although you'll need to look for dedicated books on the subject to get a better understanding of the whole subject.

The book also contains a number of chapters on security, covering both the security of your server as your own applications using the various authentication mechanisms (Windows, basic, forms and so on) and SSL. Whether you're new to IIS 7 or not, be sure to take a good look at these chapters to get a solid understanding of security in IIS. The last part of the book contains a few remaining subjects, including load balancing web farms, programmatic configuration and management and two chapters on monitoring, performance tuning, diagnostics and trouble shooting.

Overall, Professional IIS 7 is a very solid book on administrating IIS 7. Ken Schaefer and the other authors have done a great job in bringing a lot of knowledge on IIS together in one book. The book is generally concise, contains few errors and contains a lot of useful information, examples and code snippets to help you better install, manage and use your new IIS 7. I'd give the book 4.5 out of 5 stars.

The IIS 7.0 Book To Get

I own most of the IIS 7.0 books that have come out so far and this is the one for administrators to get. It covers the upgraded FTP and a little FastCGI+PHP, but does not include the new WedDAV, is sometimes weak in security details, and chapter 18 on MOF/ITIL could have been left out entirely. That being said, the book is well-rounded, solid, nice on architecture, with lots of APPCMD and XML config examples, and overall well worth the money.

Gives a good medium to high level overview of IIS7. Good value and a good book for a first time introduction to IIS or for someone whose been using IIS for years and wants to see whats new.

Good Broad Based Coverage / But Horribly Written

I don't fault the author for lapses in what may be a non-native language.
But I surely fault Packt Publishing for selling books in an English-speaking market without respecting customers enough to properly proofread and copy edit their offerings.

The technical information here is sound but I found myself re-reading and fine-parsing far more than I'd like - to the point where I began to doubt the author's expertise - justified or not.

If I have a criticism of the content it's there's too much time spent on recording tests with Selenium IDE. No one doing serious web-based automation these days is doing record and playback, and they're not strictly testing GUI controls. They're coding from scratch in either Java or C# against APIs and injecting JavaScript and/or JSON/XML. The sooner you get comfortable writing directly to the Web Driver, the sooner you'll be productive.

I'd like to recommend this book but the best I can do is 'conditionally'. There are just too many better-written sources of similar information out there.

The book is full of less relevant information, such as Java basics, Selenium RC explanations and so on. However, the most important knowledge, which I was looking for when I purchased this book - how to build the Selenium Automation framework from scratch - was not explained in detail, this section was only briefly shown in chapter 7 on literally less than 20 pages ( out of 291 pages of the book).
So overall I was dissapointed from this book, although I did learn a few new things from it.

Kevin was a troubled kid with residual demons from living two separate lives torn between his parents' divorce. Battling with drinking and drugs throughout high school and what became a short-lived college career, Kevin made a string of poor choices that landed him in jail for his final DUI, which also resulted in the death of his best friend, Tim. Hanging onto hope through his sentence, his rehab and his grieving, Kevin wrote Standing With Hope In My Eyes as a means of reaching others facing difficult, sometimes unbearable times.

Great book! Tells about a life of pain

Great book! Tells about a life of pain, uncertainty, destruction, tragedy, recovery and redemption. This is a book that today's youth can relate to and it gives hope to millions more who are heading down the same destructive path. A young mans journey thru the beginnings of life and hopes for the role model he can be. There will, one day, be a follow up book of victory and glory.

Teased by the other players for being the new guy, the boy is pleased when he has a "perfect" second half of a game, scoring a goal, although he's disappointed that his dad isn't there to watch. The pictures shift from the soccer field to the boy's bedroom, filled with soccer photographs, where the boy dreams of the future. These photographs mirror the action in the next set of illustrations, which show the boy's fantasies, as he plays in the final game of the World Cup; this time, of course, Dad is there. Foreman's language is appealingly simple, and the large, evocative watercolors add to the dreamlike quality, with details such as clouds that resemble players in action. 3 1/2 Exciting Soccer Drama, But Slightly Confusing

With the Cup being played this year, Americans will once again renew their tenuous relationship with soccer. For some kids and adults, however, soccer is an enduring love, and they're just as enthusiastic--if not as rich in tradition, as their soccer-loving counterparts in other countries. Michael's Foreman's imaginative (both literally and figuratively) text and witty illustrations convey how children everywhere dream of attaining big goals (pun intended).

Foreman opens with a scene of a gigantic, dream-like soccer field, with hundreds playing on what looks like several square miles of turf. Our unnamed hero suffers a small practical joke from his teammates, but his on-field heroics quiet them until... he wakes up.

Or does he? It becomes somewhat confusing at this point, as Foreman overreaches in his blend of the past and the future, the longings of the boy and his father. The scenes seem to switch from dream to--perhaps the boy grown up?-- playing in a stadium in front of tens of thousands of international soccer fans. The story uses the cliche of the father too busy to see his son's big goal, except we are told that "his dad usually came to all the games." That doesn't seem so bad, but, after the boy shoots "the first goal of the Final" (either in his dream, or later as an adult, or with his real team in the present--I'm not sure), we're told, "And this time--this [italics added] this time, his dad was there to see it.

After he scores that tremendous goal ("The vast crowd erupted. He had hit another wonder goal!")in the huge stadium, we get an equally confusing statement: "Just like the goal he had scored all those years before on that freezing boyhood Sunday." This must refer to the "cold" day that opens the book; however, that soccer game is interrupted by a dream, or (more probably) an image of his father when he was a boy, and his father's similar soccer hopes and dreams.

OK, so maybe it doesn't matter that the text is somewhat confusing. Perhaps some would argue that the author masterfully switches point of view and timeframe. I think, however, that the cinematic shifts in time and narrator will confuse much of the book's intended audience. I like the range of emotions here, the context, the wit and intelligence, and the vivid, imaginative pictures, but a slightly simpler book may have been more effective.

Good for Introducing Big Goals

I agree with the reviewer who said the story was "confusing." I intend to use it as a read-aloud to introduce my class' big goals for the year, as I am a 5th grade teacher in New York. However, upon delving into the story, I, too, could not figure out if the boy was really playing in the World Cup final or just dreaming about it. I did not get in which game he was actually scoring a goal. Of course, the point is that everyone can have big goals and dreams, and see them to reality if they persevere. Hopefully, I can elicit student reactions without getting bogged down with the text. I can probably spur on some interesting discussion among students as to what the author's intentions were. I would welcome others' suggestions on 5th grade level books to share or read independently.

the greatest novel of the 20th Century?

This novel was first published in the 1930s and it is a measure of the author's achievement that it still reads wonderfully today. The story has a breadth to it that amazes me, and a cast of memorable characters that linger in the memory. I love it!
It is set in an English mining town over a number of years before and after the First World War. It follows the fortunes (and misfortunes) of several families, from the wealthy mineowner's, to a humble family where the father and three sons are all miners. There are some wonderfully drawn characters, some doses of realism that shock the reader, and some moving passages which bring tears to your eyes. But there's nothing cliched or sentimental about the book, so if you like television mini-series or the kind of 'feel good' romantic stories that Hollywood specialises in, this is not for you.
But if you want a taste of real life from nearly a 100 years ago, written by an author who was there (he was a doctor in a mining village for a time and many of his books come from out of his medical background) then this is the book for you. Get Amazon to find you a copy!
I sum up this novel to friends by saying it is so great an achievement that I feel it could only have been written by God. I'm probably the only person who thinks so, but perhaps it really is the greatest novel of the 20th Century.

Nice Guys Finish Last

With apologies to Mr. Lusby, below, who apparently sees Marxists under his bed, this is as lovely a literary jewel as every other story that sprang whole and breathing from this wonderful author. I will concede that Cronin's novels have a common thread: the hero or main character usually gets what it was he thought he wanted in the end, but by that time it has cost him everything else and his life lies in ruins. Far from being shallow and two-dimensional, Cronin's characters are so real and human in their weakness, shallow cruelty and avarice that you can almost smell their sweat in the room. Another beautiful Cronin novel that I did not see listed here among his works is, "The Northern Light".

Cronin's novels evidently mean something different to each reader, but to me they warn that it is dangerous to want too much for yourself, when winning might turn in your fist like a knife and take away everything you love. "The Stars Look Down" is no exception.

Having been a miner for many years and a member of the Mines Rescue,this book and the film is very true to form.The miners houses also bring memories back-although the family members in the film were very fortunate, as my miners house was oneup and one down with the cold water tap outside by the door- the toilet was at the bottom of the garden and was shared.
My father was killed along with another 265 in the Gresford pit disaster of 1934.
I have many stories to tell- but no one believes them anymore--it was a hard working life but the comradeship was beyond belief-friends were for life.Peterblondy.
