When my life began I was passed around from home to home as I was born to a woman, who's husband was about to come home from the war and he knew nothing of my residency in his home. His command was "Either he goes or I do". Then came an arranged adoption to a couple who operated a carnival, drove taxi in the off season, and bootlegged. This home was to be the epitome of dysfunctional existence and the continuance of constant physical abuse, mental abuse, and sexual abuse. It was a lonely existence with no brothers or sisters, and because of this families shame in the community, I would not be allowed to play with the neighbourhood kids. It was a destination headed for a very lonely and fearful life. My life growing up on the midway was far from normal.

“Wake up Wayne. Wake up, it’s time to go”. I surprisingly can still remember this part of my life but I was very young, maybe as young as two or three. This call came at about 11:00PM while I slept in the back seat of the old Plymouth. You see we travel with a carnival and the backseat of the car was where I slept for the first part of the night. I can still smell the old dusty fabric on the seat that used to be my bed each night while waiting for the carnival to shut down. By the time I was awake or partially awake I was taken to the outdoor stage where the nightly square dance was being held. This was an open air nightly dance that was part of the midway activity in those days. As it got later and the people got more of a buzz from their liquor my father seemed to think it was a good time for a some pity on a little guy that people would pay a few cents to see dance. The floor cleared, and the fiddle player would come up to the microphone and announce that there was a very special talent tonight who was going to tap dance for them. The music would start up and my mother pushed me out on the dance floor where I would go through the motions of a tap dance. So often I would be in wet pants from not being able to go to the bathroom, and in clothes that were dirty and smelly. Through the music and my struggling to tap dance, I could see the audience all around the floor who were laughing, and pointing through the old light bulbs surrounded with moths and mosquito’s. When I finished my dancing I would have to pass around my fathers old taxi cap for people to throw in money. After circling the floor and collecting the money and while people applauded I would step off the stage and give the money to my father. “Go back to the car and sleep”, he would say, “and I will wake you to sleep in the tent when the grounds close down.

I would later move from the car to the tent where my mother, father, and a few carnival game workers all slept. Again I would try to sleep, but the mosquitoes biting, and the conversations going through the tent in the darkness would make it difficult. Some nights the rain made it so damp, and we did not have enough blankets to go around, so I often covered up with a piece of the carnival tent canvas. This was the start of my “Home Sweet Home”, and it was only the beginning of a long and difficult journey.

After a few years of so many incidents of physical abuse in the carnival environment, came the humiliation and bullying through school, which nearly brought me to a broken state. The journey colourfully and sorrowfully illustrates what goes on when a mother looses all bonding with me, and has no interest in me because of her unhappy marriage, and somehow only gains moments of joy by creative implementation of pain of every imaginable means on me.

My resilience to survive and the determination of my human spirit is beyond belief and understanding in this emotional and jaw dropping story.

I could not put this book down. I had to read it every spare minute I had. Such a heartbreaking story of an innocent little boy with such a cruel heartless mother. I have to say I shed a lot of tears reading this book. Sure goes to show no one knows what goes on behind closed doors. I encourage everyone to read this book.

Well, I was suppose to spend my weekend decorating for Christmas however I could not pull myself away from this story. It's unimaginable to me that a person can go through so much torture and not be totally destroyed be these experiences! It just blows my mind! Talk about a story of perseverance. I have so much respect for this man! I definitely recommend this read!

ANOTHER TOTALLY DISAPPOINTING BOOK

SO SAD..Seems to me that Nicky Epstein (who at her best is my very favorite designer) has totally blown this volume...not one imaginative design maybe except for one I thought she had used before. I really do not understand how this lady can do 5 star work and 0 star work...I feel that this book is insulting to her fans. I own about everything she has written and the variation is enormous. Just a warning to others....

Fantastic

Chloe, Zeke and Noah have faced hell and survived. The crazy doctor has been beaten, or has he. The beast is pushing forward and those crazy people created to extinguish Zekes kind are all on the loose.

What's Chloe to do? Her parents are crazy...as crazy as the doctor. But what about the elders? The suspense is killing me. The book ends with a whole new twist. A new species of enemy has just been born. Hopefully the next book will be released soon.

After escaping the torture they experienced at the hands of Dr. Brooks, Chloe and Zeke find themselves on the road to Colorado with Ellie, Baylie, and Noah. Unbeknownst to them, Noah's cousins are chasing after them - and they have Chloe's parents as hostages. Also on their tail are the psychotic Dr. Brooks, Chief Reynolds, and Aaron Reynolds.

When they arrive in Colorado they seek the help of Ellie's mentor, Olivia. Olivia agrees to help Chloe and Zeke by calling a meeting with the Landwalker Elders she trusts. When the meeting goes awry Chloe and her friends must wonder: Can they trust Olivia and the Landwalker Elders? Or are they really working for Dr. Brooks?

When Noah's cousin Wyatt finally gets Chloe on the phone and tells her to show up at their house on the Washington coastline or he'll kill her parents they end up on a crazy mission to get Chloe's parents back before it's too late.

After dealing with people that claim to want to help Chloe only for them to betray her with their own agendas or homicidal wishes, is there anyone Chloe can trust? At the end of everything will she choose to split herself and become a landwalker or a dehaian?

Wow - this book was intense. As a reader you're constantly worried about what's waiting around the bend for Chloe and her friends and whether the next person will be a friend or foe. The addition of Wyatt's perspective is like looking into the mind of a chilling psychopath. Out of all the books in the series so far I think this one holds the most action and violence, but it's very well written.

I could have done without Chloe freezing out both Zeke and Noah and focusing so much time trying to figure out who she wants, mostly because I see her working out with Zeke better. Noah's nice and all but I see him and Chloe being just better off as friends. The character I feel most sorry for is Baylie, she never asked for any of this and now she's caught up in all the danger.

Overall I think this book amped up the storyline from the previous books, making it even more complicated and involved so the reader can be swept right into Become. I'm eager to see how this series wraps up in book five, I've just really loved reading not just Arise, but all of The Awakened Fate Series and being caught up in this magical world filled with dehaians, landwalkers, greliaran, and wizards. If you're not reading this series you should be in my opinion!

Arise is book four in The Awakened Series by Skye Malone. This book is told by four different points of view, which I love! No one is who they seem to be anymore. The characters are all full of surprises and you don't know who to trust. You can't trust your friends, the cops, or your family.

Chloe is on the run, because more and more people are beginning to learn what she is, half landwalker and half dehaian.
She isn't safe on land or in the water. This book follows Chloe and her friends as they travel inland to save Chloe. In the meantime, Chloe spends a little more time with her first crush, Noah, and is not a bit confused about things with her and Zeke. This drives me insane because I love Zeke! Both guys would do absolutely anything for her.

The group, along with the elders, have a plan to save Chloe. But will it work? Is it safe? They need to hurry because the Beast is awake, stronger, and coming.

Once again, Skye Malone has an amazing mind! I also love how she supplied the little pronunciation page in the beginning of the book. It has every creature and every name listed. Definitely worth checking out! You've probably been reading all the words wrong the whole time! You might be surprised.

Fate has a way of smiling down on a couple. No matter how long it takes, Fate will have their due.

It took fifteen years for Shay to realize that she has been sabotaging her own love life. As a young girl, she fell hard for her brother’s best friend. She didn’t know better, but she followed Joe around idolizing him. From that time on, all her boyfriends never stood a chance. With a new start ahead of her, she is ready to start over. As soon as she gets her brother’s next fling out of her shower!

Well getting away and coming home couldn’t have ended up better. A couple of years ago, Joe set his eyes on the grown up Shay and he didn’t know what hit him. Now that he will be in town on business, he is going to take every chance he can get to show her the new him. But first things first after a long day of traveling…a hot shower.

One strong, single minded man and one stubborn but extremely pragmatic woman could make for a very ordinary story. Shay wants to be strong, but she has such a hard time when it comes to Joe. So she will take what she can get and enjoy it. Too bad Joe wants forever, when all Shay can think of is right now.

I loved their play. The chase was fun and their interactions were spunky. You saw trouble in the horizon heading their way. When it finally hit home it was a doozy, but not capitalized on completely in my opinion. It was forgiven a bit too easily and the conclusion was a bit fast, but all in all it was a very fun story. All the experiences that happen before the ending more than make up for it.

Ms. Holt writes such fun characters and even though I knew who played the role of Fate, it was still fun to watch it all unfold.

Joe used to be one of the best quarterbacks in the game. He had woman hanging on his every word from high school to the NFL. Shay has been in love with Joe since they were kids, but she has seen how much of a player he truly is. When they both end up staying at her brother's alone Joe realizes she's not the brat she used to be and Shay still thinks he's a player. Can Shay see he's changed? Will Joe show her all his secrets?

I have to say the first couple chapters yanked me into this read. I loved the idea of the unrequited love from the older brothers best friend, the tag-a-long little bratty sister. But then the dropped the ball somewhere and I started predicting the story line. No surprises was a straightforward and a little boring. The secrets that were kept would have a normal man bragging from the rooftops to show his worth, Joe not so much.

I have read others by this author and really enjoyed them, this one just feel a little flat for me.

I couldn't wait to read Desiree Holt's newest book, Forward Pass, after seeing the gorgeous cover and that the story involved one of my favorite tropes...falling in love with brother's best friend. Shay Beckham has had a huge crush on star quarterback, Joe Reilly ever since she was a young girl and now, she is determined to get over him once and for all. Joe has to live down his womanizing past and hope that Shay can see him for the reformed man he is now.

These two had lots of chemistry and the sex between these two throughout the book was scorching hot, as this author sure knows how to bring on the heat. I enjoyed the bantering these two engaged in and I loved that my favorite quarterback, Joe Montana, was Shay's football hero as well. I really enjoyed watching Joe and Shay embark on a real relationship and like any relationship, trust and communication was an issue with them. Shay was independent and sassy but she really needed to move on about Joe's past and not be so insecure and judgmental. Her insecurities really showed with these moments and she's stronger than that. I really liked Joe and how he turned his life around but he should have been more upfront with her about his involvement with charities and other stuff going on in his life. He asked her to trust him but that goes both ways as well. It takes two to make or break a relationship and I spent the whole time rooting for Joe and Shay. There were some memorable moments that had me swooning. I enjoyed this story immensely despite the character flaws because emotions overrule at times. This was a great beginning and I'm looking forward to the next book in this new series.

The first half of this tautly written debut reads like a thriller: Jeff, the narrator, relates his gruesome history in bits and pieces; initially, he's wrapped up in twisted loyalty to Ray, who begins to stalk his family. The author builds the tension to an almost unbearable peak in scene after scene, such as when Ray leaves the clothes in which the teen was kidnapped on Jeff's front steps or when RayAstill anonymousAchats with Jeff's father in public while the threatened teen chooses not identify him. Jeff is in deep denial about his repeated rape; looking at mug shots and rap sheets for the FBI, he cries out, "Why is every man in there some kind of sick rapist pervert?... I told you Ray isn't like that." About halfway through the novel, Ray is caught, and the breakdown of Jeff's denial makes up the rest of the book. Jeff's recovery is sensitively and dramatically handled, but the tension eases up as he no longer seems threatened and as the mystery of what really happened to him is revealed to match everyone's initial assumptions. Although it doesn't quite deliver on its promise of suspense the whole way through, this chilling story will put readers through an emotional wringer. Ages 12-up. (Sept.)

Grade 10 Up-Abducted from a California rest stop and abused-physically, emotionally, and sexually-by his kidnapper for 2 U years, Jeff, now 16, is finally released and allowed to return home. Once a star athlete and quintessential "good kid," he is reunited with a family and friends who have become strangers and is caught in a maelstrom of emotions he tries desperately to suppress and deny. Once the apple of his father's eye, Jeff now has a strained relationship with him. His siblings are eager to reconnect, but treat him with a mandated fragility. Consumed with self-loathing, feeling ashamed and unclean, Jeff refuses to cooperate with investigators and name his abductor. The denial comes to haunt him when his kidnapper asserts that their relations were consensual, thus destroying the tentative trust Jeff had rebuilt with an old friend and making his return to school a nightmare of persecution. This is a strong, uncompromising first novel. Jeff's awkwardness and raw pain at having his outlook on life forever altered are drawn with a remarkable sensitivity and honesty. Supporting characters are equally well realized, with each individual differently, yet relatedly affected by the teen's abduction. There can be no instant resolution, ironically no return "home," and there is none. Jeff's emotional scars run deeper than the physical ones scored on his back. There is, however, positive motion toward healing. At last, the boy begins to talk, breaking through his denial and expressing his anger. A powerful, difficult, yet cathartic read.

A fictional story about how a young boy is kidnapped by a sexual abuser and how he slowly comes to terms with his abuse.

This is a fictional account about a young boy who is kidnapped at a rest stop with his parents nearby and his held for several years by his sexual abuser. The focus is mainly on the boy after his kidnapper/abuser drops him off near his home and how difficult it really is for him and his parents to really understand the deep trama and emotional upheavel the boy has experienced. The FBI is very involved and the ending is well done. I found the method of capture and the circumstances involved somewhat unbelievable, but overall the story should hold the readers attention.

Terrific.

I'm really interested in kidnappings and have read lots of books about them, both fiction and nonfiction. This I think is one of my favorites. All the characters were very well done, particularly Jeff and Vin. Vin was my favorite character, the way he wouldn't give up, trying to help Jeff even as Jeff pushed him away. What happened to Jeff, the beatings and the molestations, are written about in such a way so that you know it all but not too much -- many writers less talented would turn this story into something like sadomasochistic pornography, but Catherine Atkins is much more subtle than that. Jeff's recovery with all the fits and starts seems realistic to me, and I felt like cheering when he said he was ready to talk though of course it will be years before he ever feels really safe again. A great novel; I look forward to reading future works by this author.

I have no complaints on the author's style, grammar, or character development, but I found the subject matter dark and disturbing. It's says it's for young adults, but I would think that most young adults would not have common ground with the main character Jeff and his awful experiences, thus finding the book, not only unsettling, but unrelatable.

Welcome to Grow Great Marijuana! This book was written to serve a single purpose: to teach people how to grow great marijuana indoors. Based on my own experiences in learning how to grow, it’s not as easy as it sounds. There is a lot of information already out there; some good, some bad, and some just too complicated to be useful.

When I started growing, I had always wished that there was a single book that taught the basics of how marijuana grows, what equipment I needed, and how to take care of and harvest the plants. Unfortunately, I had to read through a pile of books and make a lot of mistakes to get through my first few grows.

Some books I read were too technical, with a lot of detailed charts and diagrams. Other books were too simple and didn’t answer the questions I needed answered. I was certain that all of the essentials could be put into one easy-to-read book that took the reader from the beginning to end of growing marijuana indoors.

And you? Maybe you’ve read through a few books and now have more questions than answers. Or maybe you don’t know much about growing and want to find out if you could do it. Or maybe you’ve even tried to grow once or twice and just weren’t happy with the results. In any case, this book was written with you in mind.

The DUMMIES guide to Growing Marijuana

I think if the Dummies people made a book for growing marijuana, this would be it. I recommend this book because:

1. It's got pictures and illustrations on how to do everything from germinating seeds to cloning to harvesting.

2. It doesn't have a bunch of scientific charts and huge words, it's all easy to understand.

3. Fully covers new techniques like Sea of Green and Screen of Green.

4. Explains the safest way to get seeds and equipment.

5. Awesome pictures.

6. Covers everything from how marijuana grows, all the equipment needed to grow, every phase of growing, plus harvesting.

7. Important chapters on security and pests and disieses that helped me out a lot.

8. Again, very easy to read and understand. Got me excited to start growing.

I have some of the other books, but I'd definately start with this one just cause it's so easy to figure out.

Not a "Bible", thankfully...

Some of the other books consider themselves the grower's bible. This book doesn't make that claim, instead it's more of a How-To book that holds your hand through all the things you need to do in order to grow marijuana. From picking the room, buying the equipment, to the actual grow, it's mean to teach newbies all the basics, plus a few advanced techniques like SoG and ScrOG. The bibles are great if you just want to look up something, but if you want to actually learn from beginning to end how to grow and harvest, this is your book.

If you don't have a clue and are growing hydroponically it might be ok, otherwise waste of money

I was considering buying one of the "grow bibles" on amazon, but on reading some reviews it appeared the grow bibles were only reference texts. I found a couple recommendations of THIS book for new growers. I assumed that it still covered all of the same topics as the bibles, only in simpler terms. Boy was I ever wrong. If you don't have a single clue on how to start growing marijuana and you don't know how to use google, and your DEFINITELY going to grow hydroponically, this book might be useful. However, if your growing in soil, this book is useless. All of the material presented (with very few, small exceptions) are based on the assumption that your going to be using a hydroponic system. In fact I'd go so far as to say it should be entitled "Grow Great Marijuana Hydroponically" Also, if you know how to use google, you can find out quite easily, ALL of the information presented in this book with just a few simple searches. This book also doesn't give a lot of details about CFL lights or other fluorescant lights. It says a little bit about it, but primarily focuses on HID lights (Metal Halide, High pressure sodium) which some of us (me) just can't afford.

Also, this book spends a lot of time (seemingly needlessly) describing factors such as grow room security and location. It appears that the book has more information on the semantics of growing pot than it does on the actual process and science. There are a couple chapters on vegetative growth, flowering phase, etc - they are about 10 pages long in a book thats 250 pages. Lots of worthless filler in this book.

As I mentioned, if you were clueless, planned on growing hydroponically, and didn't care much about the science of pot, this book might be ok, which is the only reason it has two stars from me instead of one. But ALL of the information in this book is easily found by googling it, and this book is worthless if you plan to grow in soil. Also there are only a few sections of good pictures in the book, and the pictures are rather vague about why they are even in the book. I would say if you have already googled about pot and/or started growing, get one of the bibles. I know its what I'll be doing next.
