Submachine Guns and Sorcery! Mighty-thewed barbarians and grim mercenaries roam the desolate plains of Ohio. Giant snakes, and those who worship them, prowl the ruins of St. Louis. Pirates battle the Japanese invaders in the South China Sea. Bold British agents, equipped with experimental bio-technology, thwart the insidious infiltration of Stalin's humanzees. Sky-raiders strike from hidden bases in the Sahara, deros skulk in South American caverns, and the Texas Rangers fight electrical death worms to save Los Alamos. Kenneth Hite (Adventures into Darkness, Trail of Cthulhu) presents a world of savage swords and rocket men, of were-serpents and war-apes, from Australia's battered Empire to the proud city-state of Chicago. The Day After Ragnarok includes: * Complete rules and guidelines for creating a hero suited for these dark times, including new Hindrances and Edges. * Dangerous ophi-tech devices built with knowledge torn from the Thing that nearly killed the world: fiber bombs, Marconi pistols, jet-packs, and more! * A grand tour through the post-apocalyptic world of 1948, from the drowned East Coast to the Soviet empire behind the Serpent Curtain -- including the Top Five Places to Be Attacked By Pirates, the Top Five Places to Find A Remote Castle Ruled By A Madman, and much more! * Stats for more than thirty foes to shoot, stab, or sneak past: Serpent cultists, Spetsnaz troopers, swamp devils, and ... snakes! Giant, 80-foot long snakes, that is! * Over 20 pages of pure adventure: Four campaign types, each with a sample campaign laid out in nine scenario seeds. A massive Adventure Generator, helping you build every tale from the Hook to the Henchmen to the Twist ending! Four worked examples, taking the Adventure Generator's raw numbers and running. * Plus old-school random encounters for the desolate wastelands of America -- will you face slave-raiding Klansmen, the terrifying fly-by-night, or a desperate band of escaped Wehrmacht P.O.W.s? And across it all lies the trillion-ton corpse of the Midgard Serpent, killed by Truman's atomic fire but still poisoning the Earth with every night that passes. Welcome to the world at the end of the world. Welcome to... THE DAY AFTER RAGNAROK

Kenneth Hite does it again
By P. S. Mangus
Ever wanted to step out of the archaic world and fight the Outer Dark in a more modern setting? How about in the apocalyptic aftermath of World War II, will that work for you? Well get ready to take up your sword and sidearm, The Day After Ragnarok is on the shelves and daring you to play.

Written by Kenneth Hite, who describes the game as, "'Conan the Barbarian: 1948' meets `Quatermass and the Giant Snake'", Ragnarok is an alternate history game set in a world of swords, sorcery, super science and pulp adventure. This is one of the coolest sword & sanity (see link on my profile for more on this genre) settings I have ever read.

Imagine if the Nazis wanted to summon forth the Midgard Serpent, and unleash it upon the world. Now imagine it worked, ushering forth the day of Ragnarok. Jörmungandr is released upon the face of the earth, along with global chaos and mass destruction. As a last ditch effort the Allies initiate "Operation John Henry" and a lone B-29 named Strange Cargo armed with atomic explosives is sent on a suicide mission to slay the beast. The plane reaches its target, and miraculously manages to kill the Serpent with a megaton atomic blast to the head. But this was not a victory. The earth was changed... spoiled. Atomically radiated venomous blood rained down, and the body of the Midgard Serpent fell, causing tidal waves and earth quakes. Its carcass lay dead stretching from Scotland to Sicily. Madness ensues, and adventure begins...

The setting offers many challenges, including: giants, hydra, serpent cults, mutated animals and insects that have grown to monstrous proportions (giant snakes abound), and don't forget the other survivors of the apocalypse. Characters can range from arcane scholar to barbarian, secret agent to outlaw, and many other possibilities. Sounds fun, huh?

The Day After Ragnarok is a Savage Worlds setting (HERO Edition coming soon) published by Atomic Overmind Press. Even if you do not use Savage Worlds as the game system I feel the setting presented it strong enough to purchase this book anyway. Use the setting and power it with whatever game system you like.

Passable but not thrilling.
By Tim Kirk
I had high hopes for this setting, as Hite's works are usually grand. Unfortunately, I didn't find Day After Ragnarok as exciting as it sounded from other reviews, and people talking about the book.

It is passable, and well written, but it just doesn't have a spark to it that says "play me, right now!" Which I feel all pulp settings should have. It could have used a longer work to truly go into some of the details that are sadly glossed over, and built a few more "strange" ideas than the singular one of the dead Jormundgyr serpent--throwing in more Norse Myth, perhaps some pulp/Nordic magic, or the like.

There isn't praise enough for this two fisted occult adventure guide book. Buy it ASAP! Kenneth Hite is at top form here doing what he does best, creating a wild alternate history for an earth gone mad.

Important speeches, some great
By Metallurgist
This book contains 48 speeches, or excerpts from speeches (mostly the latter). It starts with Moses (with the ten commandments, which is not actually a speech) and ends with George W. Bush. Each of the 48 sections contains a picture of the speaker (or representation for those for whom no likeness is known), a brief biography of the speaker and the context of the speech. Unfortunately, in most cases the complete speech is not provided, only excerpts are presented. The choice of the speeches appears to be their historical importance, not their quality. As such, many are interesting, but far from memorable. Some are, however, powerful, very moving and worth the price of the book. I place the examples of the speeches given by FDR, Churchill, JFK, Martin Luther King and Elie Wiesel to be is this latter category. In this regard, the "I have a Dream" speech given by Martin Luther King stands far above all the others, even when the others include the likes of Churchill and John F. Kennedy.

I only have two complaints (in addition to the fact that only excerpts are given from most of the speeches). Except for the last speech (that given by George W. Bush after 9/11) the author (when it was not the speaker) is not given. The second criticism stems from the fact that the book was prepared in Great Britain and there is a certain lack of knowledge of US history. The president to succeed Woodrow Wilson was Warren Harding, not Warren Hardy. All in all, this is mostly a history book, rather than one on rhetoric.

Flawed history
By WC7P
The book is a nice collection of famous or near famous speeches. The major flaw of the book is Mr. Montefiore's personal grasp of history. His comments introducing the speeches are badly flawed in a number of places. He states that the Revolutionary War lasted 6 years. It lasted 8 years (1775 - 1783). He gives Napoleon a reason for escaping from Elba -- he was "Alarmed for the safety of his wife and son in France...." No where in any historical writing has this fact come out. Napoleon wanted to regain the power he once had. Under Hitler he states "April, by which time Hitler had survived various assassination plots by his own countrymen......". There was only one assassination plot that came to fruition. Under Churchill he states that Churchill was "Elected Prime Minister in 1940......". There was no election. It was an arrangement between the political powers in England at the time. Under Franklin D. Roosevelt there are two flaws. With respect to Roosevelt's inclinations in the early years of WW II -- "Initially determined to keep America out of the conflict, Roosevelt nevertheless....." In fact Roosevelt was in favor of getting the U.S. into the war. Politically he was prevented until the time of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Finally, Mr. Montefiore states that "....American spies indicated that Japanese naval forces were moving towards the oil-rich East Indies and Malaya. Reports that aircraft carriers were heading towards Hawaii were not taken seriously." In the first instance the reports of the Japanese task forces heading south were reported by a number of various sources, none of which were "American spies". Secondly American intelligence had lost sight of the Japanese carrier forces and reported them to be in the Inland Sea of Japan. There were NO reports of approaching carriers before the attack Dec. 7, 1941.

Instant Coffee Table Classic
By Patrick Garrett York
I originally bought this book for a seminar on rhetoric. The book, I think, did me more good than the class did, because it has started many great conversations about the power of oratory among people who have come to the house. I constantly return to it as a reference to speeches delivered by speakers from Oppenheimer to Stalin. With so many copies available for such a small price, this would be a great addition to your coffee table--no matter how you take it. On the other hand, it is not authoritative, really, just good for some fun and afternoon inspiration.

That Fateful Night: True Stories of Titanic Survivors, in Their Own Words, by Geoffrey Giuliano

Titanic.  The name invokes startling images of man's ill-conceived notion of invincibility and the consequences which occur when these ideas are proven mortally wrong.  It was the Edwardian Era, a time buzzing with the excitement and innocence of the new century. Titanic, the luxurious miracle of technology, set sail from Southampton, England with 2,207 passengers and crew on board.  They could never have envisioned the disaster which lay ahead.  On the starry night of April 14, 1912, when the great ship rushed almost headlong into an iceberg, the powerful behemoth was brought down and one of history's most tragic tales was born.

That Fateful Night tells the story of what happened in the words of those who lived it.  It is a collection of first person accounts, many exclusive, from the survivors of the legendary disaster who would never forget the events of those brief hours, their own experiences and the many hundreds who perished. Recorded over the course of the last two decades, many of these personal stories would be lost to time had these recordings not been made. These personal accounts recreate with unparalled immediacy and poignancy man at his best and worst.

Listeners will be moved by the words of  passengers and crew members, including Sir Cosmo Duff Gordon, Lady Duff Gordon, Eva Hart, Millvina Dean, Fourth Officer Boxhall, Second Officer Charles H. Lightoller, and others.  Also included are interviews with Sir Arthur H. Rostron, Captain of the Carpathia, scientist and author Dr. Robert Ballard, and Oscar-winning director of the film Titanic, James Cameron. That Fateful Night adds a unique and compelling dimension to the astounding body of work documenting this historic tragedy.

From School Library Journal
Grade 6 Up-This collection of interviews with survivors of the Titanic disaster proves that this exciting story doesn't need teen heart throbs and special effects to interest an audience. Eva Hart, Charles Lightoller, Arthur Rostron and many others recall the events of 1912 with such emotion and clarity that listeners can't help but be moved. While they played different roles-passenger, crew, rescuer-each came to the conclusion that the disaster was the result of the arrogance of man and his belief in the superiority of machines. The audio quality is clear, even on the older recordings of Lightoller and Rostron. The narration by Geoffrey Giuliano is well-paced and not intrusive. The inclusion of music from the era-especially the version of "Nearer My God to Thee" that Eva Hart could never bear to listen to after the disaster-adds tangible emotion to the narrative. Listeners in middle school and above will find the recollections fascinating. Hot on the heels of the movie, this is a respectful, thoughtful look at the most incredible man-made disaster of the century, if not of recorded history.

Interesting....
By James
This CD, although excellent in recording Titanic survivors eyewitness accounts, just doesn't live up to my expectations. The abridged version, I feel, cuts out some interesting information and leaves standard information surviving. Interesting accounts on Captain Smith from Eva Heart and a well prepared "speech" from Captain Rostron add intrest to this CD. Good to have but could have been jucier.
