Dominant & His Dominatrix
By P. Phan
In Jennifer Probst's latest Steele Brother book, Dare Me, she has written Rafe Steele's story about a dominant male who wants to be dominated by a woman in the bedroom. This is a secret he's been keeping from his ultra dominant brothers. He embarks on Madam Eve's services to fulfill his ultimate fantasy of submission. Enter Summer Preston, an innocent looking woman who wants to be a Dominatrix. I enjoyed that these characters were strong and not afraid of going after what they wanted in and out of the bedroom. I liked that Rafe still showed dominant tendencies even when he was submitting to Summer and made the sex scenes hotter. Now, it's up to Rafe to accept the ultimate dare of losing his heart and submitting his body for all time. This was a surprising twist from the previous two Steele Brother books yet I still enjoyed it tremendously.

Dare Me
By l robs
Very Short read. Appx 40 pages long. Basically a one night stand turning into a passionate true love, resulting in Marriage. Storyline: they meet, they have sex all night, they live happily ever after. I got it on my Kindel, so was really surprised it ended so quickly. I really like Jennifer Probst books so that is why I got the whole series, which are about the main characters two brothers. So it is basically 3 different books, approximately 40 pages long each with same storyline.

A decadent dare to be different
By Dal M
A decadent dare to be different between a man who can’t admit he wants to submit and a woman whose dominant tendencies are hidden behind wholesome image.

Rafe Steele is a decorated war hero who has lead men into hostile territory and brought them back because of his ability to take charge. His strong dominant show just about every aspect of his life except one. He desires to yield control in the bedroom, but it’s something he can’t bring himself to admit to his brothers. Unknowingly they convince him to set up a perfect night through a private matchmaking agency. He thought one night of experimentation would be enough. But when he meets a vixen under angel’s clothing who makes him want more, can he get past his worries and take her dare for more?

Summer’s daytime job as an elementary school teach fulfills her need to nurture young minds. But her need for a man who’s secure and brave to appreciate and connect with her regardless of her dominatrix tendencies isn’t quite so easy to find. Unable to form bonds with the men she’s seen, she looks to Fanta-C to set her up. She never expect a blind one night stand would lead her to Rafe Steele, a man who fulfilled her in every way she craved. But can she convince him to go for more?

The role reversal is not typical and I found it to be a nice change of pace. I loved how Rafe and Summer fought for control in the bedroom and found Rafe’s turmoil between his manly man demeanor and his desire to submit interesting. So the reason for my rating is that for some reason I couldn’t fully connect with either main characters and also felt it could have been steamier.

I’ve read several of Jennifer Probst’s books and I always enjoy how she writes very likeable characters and an interesting story with a good amount of sexiness and romance. Dare Me is no exception.
Dare Me is novella #3 in Steele Brothers series by Jennifer Probst. Told from both point of view and a happy ending. It can be read as a standalone.

Review
The unnamed narrator and her doctor husband, John, live in "a colonial mansion, a hereditary estate..." She believes the house is haunted. "John laughs at me, of course, but one expects that." She believes she is ill but her husband, and her brother, also a physician, say it is only "temporary nervous depression - a slight hysterical tendency..." They insist on "phosphates or phosphites - whichever it is - and tonics" and absolutely forbid work until she is well again. She believes "Personally...that congenial work, with excitement and change, would do me good. Personally, I disagree with their ideas. But what is one to do? I did write for a while in spite of them; but it does exhaust me a good deal - having to be so sly about it, or else meet with heavy opposition." She is confined to rest in a room she hates with wallpaper she finds hideously ugly: "The color is repellent, almost revolting: a smoldering unclean yellow... dull yet lurid orange in some places, a sickly sulphur tint in others." It is in this room that she writes her secret journal that is this story. She struggles to believe in her husband and brother's "kindness" and "care" while, with terrifying starkness, she narrates her journey into madness. -- For great reviews of books for girls, check out Let's Hear It for the Girls: 375 Great Books for Readers 2-14. -- From 500 Great Books by Women; review by Jesse Larsen

About the Author
Largely self-taught, Gilman supported herself through writing and lecturing. She was at one time a settlement house leader and an active member of the American Sociological Society. Her wide sociological circle included lasting friendships with Jane Addams, Edward A. Ross, and Lester F. Ward.

From AudioFile
In 1892 an unnamed woman passes the slow days of summer writing down her innermost thoughts while convalescing. Her observations focus on the strange effects of the peeling, fading, yellow wallpaper in her bedroom. The Spencer Library has created a unique audio experience in this chilling tale with profound psychological and moral implications. Claudette Sutherland gives a remarkable performance. Her subtly expressive voice is so skillfully recorded that her soft intakes of breath have a desperate life of their own. The haunting beauty of Carol Nethen's original score can momentarily distract, but it supports more than it interferes, a tribute both to the composer and to the excellence of the recording standards. The listener is rewarded with a fully realized dramatic performance with a strong musical presence. C.T. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Moving and Disturbing
By Jonpaul H. Guinn
Thematically remarkable for a short story of that time from a female author. Gilman ratchets up the tension of a woman's psychological decline while simultaneously making a pointed critique of the era. It manages to be eerier than much of Poe without ratcheting up the Gothic tendencies of similar stories of psychological decline.

WOMEN ARE PRETTY MUCH PEOPLE, SEEMS TO ME
By Pamela A. Poddany
THE YELLOW WALLPAPER

Written in January, 1892, by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, THE YELLOW WALLPAPER is a delight and a treat to read. Truly, Gilman was a woman to beat all.

THE YELLOW WALLPAPER is one of seven short stories in this small little 70 page book. However, there's nothing small about Gilman's writing. Such candor! Such wit! Such wisdom for a lady in the late 1800's, writing as a profession -- I mean, this was something that was just not done!

THE YELLOW WALLPAPER is about a woman who is 'nervous' and depressed. Her husband, a doctor, takes her to an old home to vacation and get well. She is suffering from depression after giving birth, but back in those days, this was an unknown and undiagnosed disease. Her hubby decides she needs rest and relaxation and insists she stay in an upper floor room, the one with the yellow wallpaper. Sadly, the days and weeks of being isolated lead this poor woman down a path that has no return. Her journey into madness is so wonderfully detailed you can feel her mind slip-slidin' away. What an awesome and shocking read. Yet, Gilman handles this poor woman's sorry fate with such wit, humor, and insight. To quote -- "John is a physician, and perhaps -- (I would not say it to a living soul, of course, but this is dead paper and a great relief to my mind --) perhaps that is one reason I do not get well fast. You see, he does not believe I am sick!" To sum up, the poor woman 'sees' things in the wallpaper and keeps a journal of her days/nights. What an enticing read. Very haunting.

Another favorite was TURNED. A married couple have a lovely young girl as a maid. After the husband seduces her and gets her with child, he goes away on a business trip. The young maid and the missus are left alone to work things out. The way things work out for the two women -- left alone to clean up the mess -- is quite the surprise, shocking, and very, very well written. A twist of fate opens the eyes of the young wife and she is no fool, revenge could be the answer.

Gilman writes beyond her time -- all of her writing was written and published in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Women were treated like children, received no respect, and were not considered equals to men. These stories are full of fun, wit, humor, surprises, and read easily and well. All of them revolve around the relationships between men and women and are fun and fantastic, yet disturbing both in content and truth.

Charlotte Perkins Gilman was born in 1860 and died in 1935 at the age of 75. She committed suicide after learning she had incurable cancer. She was an advocate of euthanasia and killed herself with an overdose of chloroform.

Gilman was a sociologist, novelist, author of short stories, poems, fiction and non-fiction. She was also a lecturer on social reform. Her aunt was Harriet Beecher Stowe.

THE YELLOW WALLPAPER short story was written in two days but has been enjoyed by readers around the world for over 100 years. Gilman's writing technique has made this reader a fan and I will certainly read more of her work. She is a great user of the exclamation point !!! -- in fact, in YELLOW WALLPAPER that simple !!! after thoughts and sentences makes the reader aware of how quickly and surely our friend who sees things in that horrid wall covering is going insane.

I highly recommend this small book of short stories -- they will stay with you for years to come.

Thank you.

Pam

The Yellow Wallpaper- purely incredible

What an incredibly twisted metaphor of a story! I remember being introduced to the piece in high school, but did not truly grasp it's beauty until I read it again in college. A masterpiece.

Nirvana: Concept, Imagery, Narrative, by Steven Collins

The idea of nirvana (Pali nibbāna) is alluring but elusive for non-specialists and specialists alike. Offering his own interpretation of key texts, Steven Collins explains the idea in a new, accessible way - as a concept, as an image (metaphor), and as an element in the process of narrating both linear and cyclical time. Exploring nirvana from literary and philosophical perspectives, he argues that it has a specific role: to provide 'the sense of an ending' in both the systematic and the narrative thought of the Pali imaginaire. Translations from a number of texts, including some dealing with past and future Buddhas, enable the reader to access source material directly. This book will be essential reading for students of Buddhism, but will also have much to teach anyone concerned with Asia and its religions, or indeed anyone with an interest in the ideas of eternal life or timelessness.

NOTE: Not a new book
By A reader
Readers should be aware that this is a new version of Part 1 of Nirvana and Other Buddhist Felicities in what the author hopes is a more accessible form for the general reader. This is stated clearly in the Introduction but is not noted in the amazon product description, unfortunately. Given that I already own the other title, I wish it had been made more clear.

Nirvana as concept, image and narrative
By Ed
In this book, Nirvana: Concept, Imagery, Narrative, Steven Collins pursues a number of approaches that a general reader could pursue in order to make sense of the Buddhist principle of nirvana. He does so by framing nirvana in categories familiar to the western mind.

Chapter one, "Syetematic and Narrative Thought" is rather straight forward. Here Collins addresses the role nirvana plays in the capacity of systems and narratives. Both of these are abstract phenomenon construed by human intellection. In such a Buddhist system, Nirvana represents the goal towards which the practitioner works or perhaps the possibility of liberation from the system itself. This is, of course, problematic as such a term serves double duty as being both inside and outside the system. In the Buddhist narrative, Nirvana simply represents the end of the story. Collins here digresses on the concept of eternity, arguing that immortality is ultimately unsatisfactory and that Nirvana is essentially a superior form of death.

Chapter two, "Nirvana as Concept" addresses several points of Buddhist doctrine concerning nirvana, starting with karma and dependant origination. In his discussion on the difference between nirvana and parinirvana, Collins returns to his point from the preceding chapter on Nirvana as a superior form of death. He also makes the point that nirvana is both an acquisition (of wisdom and discernment) as well as cessation (of generating new karma and suffering). He also points out that in the abbhidharma, nirvana is explicitly defined as a dharma; a real, existent thing.

Lacking in this chapter, I found, was a discussion about the difference between a Buddha and Praccekabuddha. That is, insufficient attention was given to the role of discriminative insight in Buddhist awakening. Next, perhaps merely a semantic complaint, Collins writes, "This chapter [Nirvana as a concept] has tried to articulate what Buddhist systematic thought says about the concept of nirvana. It is a real, external, and timeless Existent [dharma], not merely a concept..." (58). Why on earth would the conclusion of the chapter be contrary to the chapter title? Colllins' purpose in this chapter is stated, "This issue is: how to find a way to understand nirvana from the external (etic) point of view that preserves the internal (emic) characterization of it, without simply restating what that is." (58-59) I can't help but wonder how the Buddha would have addressed this statement. Can nirvana qua concept and nirvana qua experience be reconciled? Any approach that attempts to reconcile such disparate views would be certainly problematic.

Chapter three, "Nirvana as Image" begins with a very interesting philological investigation into nirvana and parinirvana which is quite informative and interesting. The chapter moves on to the image or symbol of the cessation of ordinary consciousness and then to the image of various states of happiness. It concludes with some classic images or metaphors of nirvana; quenching fire, ocean, dry land (other shore), and the city of nirvana.

Chapter four, "Nirvana, Time, and Narrative" looks again at how nirvana concludes our understanding of time. Collins defined nirvana as a point in which the narrative imagination must stop. Furthermore, he writes that "in narrated time, nirvana offers meaningful closure to life whereas death is often seen as a(n often tragic) breaking-off of life." The rest of the chapter is devoted to articulating many examples of ideas of nirvana and its role in terminating the various methods of telling the Buddhist story; 1.) end of stories or sermons, 2.) climax of series of epithets, synonyms and sections in a text, 3.) Climax of a list of meditative states, 4.) Aspiration for the audience at the end of a text, 5.) aspiration at the end of a sermon, 6.) aspiration for authors/redactors.

Chapter five, "Past and Future Buddhas" addresses the relationship between Buddhas prior to the historical Buddha and Buddhas yet to come. I personally found this to be the least engaging and least interesting chapter of the book.

Overall, Collin's project is to demonstrate how that in "Buddhism, the ineffable is brought into being as an aspect of the effable." (185), but I'm not entirely sure this was accomplished. I continuously return to the "explanatory gap" of the philosophy of mind between theory and experience. What more can one do but suggest that these two perspectives are correlated? Ultimately, their relationship is of ultimate concern for Buddhism. The very notion of discriminatory insight, to me, suggests the bridging of this gap where one can both experience reality as it is and make a meaningful utterance about it from the perspective of discriminative wisdom. This aspect of nirvana seems entirely lacking in this book. The conversation addressing non-dualism and the following experience is direly missing.

This work strikes me as an attempt to force Buddhism into western categories so that the average western reader can find a place for nirvana within their worldview in the capacity of either a concept, imagery or narrative. But what of experience? This perspective is simply insufficiently addressed. The historical Buddha said little or nothing about nirvana, presumably because nirvana qua experience is simply not a concept, image or narrative.

Finally, a word on Collins' resources. I found many of his references to muddle an already complicated subject. These references further demonstrate the agenda and approach of Collins. Although Collins cites the usual cast of characters in Buddhist studies, the following are a list of other sources, all of which I know little or nothing about. Caroline Walker Bynum, Jacques Le Goff, Hubert and Mauss, Jim Egge, Clifford Geertz, Thomas Mann, Wendy Doniger O'Flaherty, Jerome Bruner, E.M. Forster, Hayden White, Robert Thornton, Bernard Williams, Zygmunt Bauman, Jorge Luis Borges, MacDannell and Lang, Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, F.H. Brabant, Eric Griffiths, Marcel Proust, Arthur Hallam, Mircea Eliade, Shlomith Rimmon-Kenan, Barbara Adam, Edmund Leach, Barbara Hernnstein Smith, Paul Ricoeur, Ernst Gellner, Frank Ramsey. Personally, I found these references to alienate me from the text. Although Collins says the book is for the "general reader," these references suggest otherwise and suggest his methodological biases.

Overall, not too shabby of a book. It helped me turn my attention away from philosophy and towards a social study of Buddhism. If one is studying Buddhism outside of the capacity of philosophy or meditation, this book will surely be of tremendous help. This book simply seems to me to be focused on Buddhism as a social religious phenomenon.

A clear and engaging the on Self and Salvation in Buddhist thought
By Amazon Customer
I have read several books by Steven Collins and greatly enjoyed them all. His close reading of Buddhist texts is fascinating, especially in his earlier "Selfless Persons" Selfless Persons: Imagery and Thought in Theravada Buddhism in which he deals with Theravada Buddhist categories of thought around the concept of personhood. I also highly recommend a related multi-disciplinary collection called "The Category of the Person" The Category of the Person: Anthropology, Philosophy, History edited by Carrithers, Collins and Lukes and featuring essays on personhood by these three and also Marcel Mauss, Ernest Gellner, Charles Taylor and Derek Parfitt, among others.

Ethics and War: An Introduction (Cambridge Applied Ethics), by Steven P. Lee

What are the ethical principles underpinning the idea of a just war and how should they be adapted to changing social and military circumstances? In this book, Steven P. Lee presents the basic principles of just war theory, showing how they evolved historically and how they are applied today in global relations. He examines the role of state sovereignty and individual human rights in the moral foundations of just war theory and discusses a wide range of topics including humanitarian intervention, preventive war, the moral status of civilians and enemy combatants, civil war and terrorism. He shows how just war theory relates to both pacifism and realism. Finally, he considers the future of war and the prospects for its obsolescence. His clear and wide-ranging discussion, richly illustrated with examples, will be invaluable for students and other readers interested in the ethical challenges posed by the changing nature of war.

"...this is a fine book.... it is one to read, and then keep as a reference..."
Nick Fotion, Emory University, Notre Dame Philosophical Review

"This book deserves to become a classic.... Lee draws on authors from all historical periods in his 225-item bibliography and 686 footnotes to argue for and against the questions framing each topic. His knowledge of the literature is encyclopedic.... Essential..."

Pretty good introduction to Just War Theory
By Jeffrey K. Mann
Dr. Lee has written a pretty good introduction to Just War Theory in this well-organized and clearly written work. He combines a solid introduction to the theoretical aspects of the topic with plenty of real world examples. It is written at a level appropriate for the college student who wants to learn about the ethics of war, and it would make a fine introductory textbook for a class dealing with that issue. The greatest strength of this book is the outlined structure that Lee used, helping the reader organize the material in her own mind. It is also helpful for anyone wishing to jump to (or skip) certain sections. This would also be quite useful for an instructor who could tell students, "Today we're going to look at section 2.2, 'The origins of the just war tradition.'"

What I was less impressed by was Lee's own politics entering the conversation in subtle ways. For an introduction of this nature, it seemed inappropriate, and sometimes a bit dishonest. While students might not notice the ax he has to grind, he is nonetheless doing so. There were also places where I was disappointed in his analysis. For example, on p. 22, he announces that particularistic pacifism is not "a moral view at all" because it is not "universalistic." This completely ignores approaches to ethics with a long foundation in eastern religion/philosophy as well as Roman Catholicism.

Over all, if one is looking for a good introduction to just war theory, and can remember that Lee is not the final word on the subject, I could recommend this book. I certainly benefited from reading it.

Horrible text book. I got an A in the class in spite of Steven P., Lee. Lets play a drinking game and have a shot every time Lee says Jus Ad Bellum.

This is the first edition, they changed the pictures for the second edition and I'm told that the second edition is confusing. This is very helpful in learning the long form except that I sometimes wish I had an extra hand or two to hold the book open while I'm trying to follow the instructions.

a tai chi form with a solid lineage base is a must for the serious student. If you can find an instructor who teaches this form or even the shorter forms 16&64 you would be wise to do so.

First U.S. Publication

A major literary event--the complete, uncensored journals of Sylvia Plath, published in their entirety for the first time.

Sylvia Plath's journals were originally published in 1982 in a heavily abridged version authorized by Plath's husband, Ted Hughes. This new edition is an exact and complete transcription of the diaries Plath kept during the last twelve years of her life. Sixty percent of the book is material that has never before been made public, more fully revealing the intensity of the poet's personal and literary struggles, and providing fresh insight into both her frequent desperation and the bravery with which she faced down her demons. The complete Journals of Sylvia Plath is essential reading for all who have been moved and fascinated by Plath's life and work.

Amazon.com Review
In the decades that have followed Sylvia Plath's suicide in February 1963, much has been written and speculated about her life, most particularly about her marriage to fellow poet Ted Hughes and her last months spent writing the stark, confessional poems that were to become Ariel. And the myths surrounding Plath have only been intensified by the strong grip her estate--managed by Hughes and his sister, Olwyn--had over the release of her work. Yet Plath kept journals from the age of 11 until her death at 30. Previously only available in a severely bowdlerized edition, The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath have now been scrupulously transcribed (with every spelling mistake and grammatical error left intact) and annotated by Karen V. Kukil, supervisor of the Plath collection at Smith College.

The journals show the breathless adolescent obsessed with her burgeoning sexuality, the serious university student competing for the highest grades while engaging in the human merry-go-round of 1950s dating, the graduate year spent at Cambridge University where Plath encountered Ted Hughes. Her version of their relationship (dating is definitely not the appropriate term) is a necessary, and deeply painful, complement to Birthday Letters. On March 10, 1956, Plath writes: Please let him come, and give me the resilience & guts to make him respect me, be interested, and not to throw myself at him with loudness or hysterical yelling; calmly, gently, easy baby easy. He is probably strutting the backs among crocuses now with seven Scandinavian mistresses. And I sit, spiderlike, waiting, here, home; Penelope weaving webs of Webster, turning spindles of Tourneur. Oh, he is here; my black marauder; oh hungry hungry. I am so hungry for a big smashing creative burgeoning burdened love: I am here; I wait; and he plays on the banks of the river Cam like a casual faun. Plath's documentation of the two years the couple spent in the U.S. teaching and writing explicitly highlights the dilemma of the late-1950s woman--still swaddled in expectations of domesticity, yet attempting to forge her own independent professional and personal life. This period also reveals in detail the therapy sessions in which Plath lets loose her antipathy for her mother and her grief at her father's death when she was 8--a contrast to the bright, all-American persona she presented to her mother in the correspondence that was published as Letters Home. The journals also feature some notable omissions. Plath understandably skirted over her breakdown and attempted suicide during the summer of 1953, though she was to anatomize the events minutely in her novel The Bell Jar.

Fragments of diaries exist after 1959, which saw the couple's return to England and rural retreat in Devon, the birth of their two children, and their separation in late 1962. An extended piece on the illness and death of an elderly neighbor during this period is particularly affecting and was later turned into the poem "Berck-Plage." Much has been made of the "lost diaries" that Plath kept until her suicide--one simply appears to have vanished, the other Hughes burned after her death. It would seem rapacious to wish for more details of her despair in her final days, however. It is crystallized in the poems that became Ariel, and this is what the voice of her journals ultimately send the reader back to. Sylvia Plath's life has for too long been obfuscated by anecdote, distorting her major contribution to 20th-century literature. As she wrote in "Kindness": "The blood jet is poetry. There is no stopping it." --Catherine Taylor

From Publishers Weekly
This book constitutes a literary event. Over 400 pages of never-before-published personal writings make this first comprehensive volume of Plath's journals and notes from 1950 to 1962 indispensable reading for both scholars and general readers interested in the poet. Plath's journals were previously published in 1982 and heavily censored by her husband, poet Ted Hughes. But even the diary entries that have been available to the public demand re-reading in the context of fresh materials. In the newly revealed writings, we see an even more complex, despairing psyche struggling to create in the face of powerful demons. Plath's intense bitterness towards her mother emerges in full force, particularly in her notes on her psychoanalysis by Ruth Beuscher in Boston from 1957 to 1959. Plath's writing is by turns raw, obsessive, brilliant and ironic. Her sensitivity about rejections from magazines, her struggle to establish a daily routine of reading and learning, and her ongoing attempts to ward off depression provide reminders of her drive and ambition, despite her feelings of inferiority with respect to her husband. This work constitutes an invaluable primary source as well as a thoroughly engrossing narrative whose omissions are sometimes as important as its inclusions. (There is, for example, surprisingly little on Plath's sudden marriage to Hughes.) Strong print media attention focusing on new revelations will drive early sales of this important work, and it should become a staple backlist title. Editor Kukil is assistant curator of rare books at Smith College, where Plath was an undergraduate and later a lecturer.

From Library Journal
Plath's admirers should prepare themselves for another dose of her bitter medicine: Anchor Books has announced the U.S. publication of her "complete, uncensored journals." (This unabridged edition appeared first in England.) Judiciously and unobtrusively edited by curator Kukil, who oversees the Plath Collection at Smith College, the text includes the portions suppressed by Plath's husband, the poet Ted Hughes, now deceased, when he authorized an earlier American edition. About two-thirds of the writings, which cover the last years of Plath's fevered life, have not been available to the public previously. All of the difficulties and contradictions that made Plath a literary icon are contained in these intense, confessional revelations, including her anger, egotism, frustrations, self-destructiveness, and passionate need to express herself. Certain to generate dozens of new academic papers, this is essential for anyone engaged in Plath studies.DCarol A. McAllister, Coll. of William & Mary Lib., Williamsburg, VA

Review of The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath
By Susan Rudd
I love her. Probably because I can relate to a lot of what she went through being mentally ill myself. Such a wonderful talent that we lost way too soon like so many others. I cannot help but wonder what other wonderful things she would have written had she not made that fateful decision to end her life. She writes at great length about her life, her feelings, and all she went through. I have wanted this book for a long time now, and it did not disappoint. I want everything she has ever written. I do wish her husband hadn't destroyed the journals she had written up to the time of her death. If you love Sylvia Plath as I do, this is a must read!

Inspiring
By M. Smith
While Sylvia Plath is known for the way she passed away, head in the oven for those who do not know, the way she lived her life is reflected here, in her writings. They are deep and moving, they also make you want to sit down for hours and write out your own musings of the world and the people around you. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone remotely interested in Mrs. Plath, she is intelligent, insightful, witty and even her depressed moments teach you something about the world. A must read!

An incredible tribute to an incredible woman
By Aleesa Kate
I didn't realize how large this book was until it arrived. I will be occupied for a while and have a feeling I will come back to it over and over again, just like I did with The Bell Jar. Sylvia Plath was and is an incredible writer and one of my absolute favorites. It is amazing how someone who lived so long ago still wrote in a way you can relate to in what is almost 2017. She makes me cry and my heart hurt and then full of joy and sometimes even a laugh or two comes... I can't explain it. I would suggest her writings to anyone and plan to own them all.

Rabble Rousers: The American Far Right in the Civil Rights Era (Politics and Culture in the Twentieth-Century South Ser.), by Clive Webb

The decade following the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision saw white southerners mobilize in massive resistance to racial integration. Most segregationists conceded that ultimately they could only postpone the demise of Jim Crow. Some militant whites, however, believed it possible to win the civil rights struggle. Histories of the black freedom struggle, when they mention these racist zealots at all, confine them to the margin of the story.

These extremist whites are caricatured as ineffectual members of the lunatic fringe. Civil rights activists, however, saw them for what they really were: calculating, dangerous opponents prepared to use terrorism in their stand against reform. To dismiss white militants is to underestimate the challenge they posed to the movement and, in turn, the magnitude of civil rights activists’ accomplishments. The extremists helped turn massive resistance into a powerful political phenomenon. While white southern elites struggled to mobilize mass opposition to racial reform, the militants led entire communities in revolt.

Rabble Rousers turns traditional top-down models of massive resistance on their head by telling the story of five far-right activists―Bryant Bowles, John Kasper, Rear Admiral John Crommelin, Major General Edwin Walker, and J. B. Stoner―who led grassroots rebellions. It casts new light on such contentious issues as the role of white churches in defending segregation, the influence of anti-Semitism in southern racial politics, and the divisive impact of class on white unity. The flame of the far right burned brilliantly but briefly. In the final analysis, violent extremism weakened the cause of white southerners. Tactical and ideological tensions among massive resisters, as well as the strength and unity of civil rights activists, accelerated the destruction of Jim Crow.

Fascinating
By Whozapuzalooza
I read this book for a grad class about the 1960s. While most studies of the Civil Rights movement focus on the movement itself, Webb instead examines the leading actors of those who opposed desegregation. This book is not about the KKK or other groups, while they merit some mention, Webb focuses on the men who deemed themselves the leaders and/or agitators who often successfully stirred ordinary citizens to violent action. This book also relies heavily on the supposition of class warfare within the South, in that blue-collar laborers were often excluded from anti-desegregation because of a perceived lack of education. This exclusion left the door open for agitators to capitalize on the income gaps and the supposed problems desegregation would cause. Although I read it for a class, I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn more about the dark side of the Civil Rights era.

A fascinating slice of history
By Michael D. Newton
Rabble Rousers fills a void in scholarship surrounding the African American civil rights era--specifically, the role played by key racist demagogues outside of government in organizing violent white resistance to desegregation. The individuals profiled, often overlooked or briefly mentioned in passing by general histories of the period, bear a lesson for modern Americans in an age of racist "Tea Party" madness.
