Spiritual Metaphysics with a Southern Baptist Flavor!

As a lover of teachers who try to open the minds of people to the reality of Oneness, I am now a big fan of Reverend Frederick Eikerenkoetter - better known as Reverend Ike. The best description I can give of this book would be "New Thought with Soul!" Rev Ike interprets the Bible esoterically rather than literally. This book is a fun-to-read spiritual study guide with 52 subjects that each have a separate chapter. Each chapter ends with a spiritual mind treatment and review questions. A few of the chapter titles are:
* Create Your Own Garden of Eden
* Will the Real Jesus Please Stand Up?
* You are what you feed your mind?
* Are You Ready for What You Want?
* The Treasure of God-In-You.
In addition to here on Amazon, you can also purchase the book from his website. I found it cheaper there.

An eye-opening, life-changing book!

I've had this book for years. I'm not a religious person, but I am spiritual and I believe in the power of the mind and the power of my thoughts. That is what Rev. Ike teaches in this book. And believing in oneself and loving oneself because God is in You! It's so easy to read and to re-read. Each of the 52 chapters is self-contained and contains eye-opening teaching and affirmations that you can put to use right away. This book will change the way you look at life! A change for the better!. Also, for those who don't already know -- there are many wonderful Rev. Ike videos on YouTube. Just go to YouTube and search for Rev. Ike.

This book is too technical for people who are new to the subject of plate tectonics. In fact, I think it is fair to say that if you can understand this book you don't need to read it but if you need to read it you won't understand it. Books like this have to be leavened with a human dimension in the form of stories about people. This book has such stories but they are very brief and tend to get burried under the tecnical detail. There are other books in the "A Very Short Introduction" series which give far more accessible introductions to plate tectonic (e.g. "Earth Science: A Very Short Introduction"). I would suggest that anyone who was entirely new to the subject should read one of them instead.

Excellent book! The author has a gift for emphasizing the basic physics in a simple, intuitive way. It's short, which is a plus, because you get a lot of understanding in a short time. I don't think I have read a better introduction to plate tectonics anywhere.

The Prince and the Nun is one of the earlier novels by Jacqueline George and is set in 1940 in the Slovakian village of Krasna Dolina. Therese von Falberg is Mother Superior of the Sisters of Magdalene, whose Convent is housed in Montebello Castle and also the Chatelaine of the Castle whilst the reigning Count Egerhazy and his family have fled to America at the first rumblings of war. When Captain Prince Franz Mefist of the Imperial Army turns up to establish his Army base at the Castle, he matter-of-factly informs Therese he will need a dozen of her nuns to entertain his officers in the Officers Club. At her shocked refusal, he orders some village women to be found for the purpose. Therese soon realises that, to save the wives and daughters of the village, she will have to agree to become the Madam of the nuns' bordello. Mefist's cousin Wanda turns up to help the nuns become courtesans and the girls are happy to follow orders. But as a nun, Therese finds her growing attraction to Mefist and her curiosity about sex disturbing.
I have always enjoyed sexy romance and erotica, but what drew me to this novel was the plot. At first I was unsure about nuns in the 40s being so uninhibited, then I decided that with their vow of obedience to their Mother Superior and Franz's and Wanda's charisma and after all, it's the war, I could accept that and sit back and enjoy the story. Certainly, none of the nuns who taught me were like these: I guess I was taught by Sister Brigitte clones. I remain intrigued at where Therese drew the line on her own personal acceptable behaviour. This story has plenty of humour and romance and some very hot sex in different flavours. The backstory of the war goings-on give the plot realism and some lighter relief between the hotter scenes. The characters had some depth and novel asks some ethical questions about life during wartime. I would have liked a bit more of Therese and Mefist at the end. The name of the sisters' order was a cute touch, considering the profession of Mary Magdalene. I enjoyed this novel and I think it would translate well into an adult movie.

According to the received history, the Cistercian order was founded in Cîteaux, France, in 1098 by a group of Benedictine monks who wished for a stricter community. They sought a monastic life that called for extreme asceticism, rejection of feudal revenues, and manual labor for monks. Their third leader, Stephen Harding, issued a constitution, the Carta Caritatis, that called for the uniformity of custom in all Cistercian monasteries and the establishment of an annual general chapter meeting at Cîteaux.

The Cistercian order grew phenomenally in the mid-twelfth century, reaching beyond France to Portugal in the west, Sweden in the north, and the eastern Mediterranean, ostensibly through a process of apostolic gestation, whereby members of a motherhouse would go forth to establish a new house. The abbey at Clairvaux, founded by Bernard in 1115, was alone responsible for founding 68 of the 338 Cistercian abbeys in existence by 1153. But this well-established view of a centrally organized order whose founders envisioned the shape and form of a religious order at its prime is not borne out in the historical record.

Through an investigation of early Cistercian documents, Constance Hoffman Berman proves that no reliable reference to Stephen's Carta Caritatis appears before the mid-twelfth century, and that the document is more likely to date from 1165 than from 1119. The implications of this fact are profound. Instead of being a charter by which more than 300 Cistercian houses were set up by a central authority, the document becomes a means of bringing under centralized administrative control a large number of loosely affiliated and already existing monastic houses of monks as well as nuns who shared Cistercian customs. The likely reason for this administrative structuring was to check the influence of the overdominant house of Clairvaux, which threatened the authority of Cîteaux through Bernard's highly successful creation of new monastic communities.

For centuries the growth of the Cistercian order has been presented as a spontaneous spirituality that swept western Europe through the power of the first house at Cîteaux. Berman suggests instead that the creation of the religious order was a collaborative activity, less driven by centralized institutions; its formation was intended to solve practical problems about monastic administration. With the publication of The Cistercian Evolution, for the first time the mechanisms are revealed by which the monks of Cîteaux reshaped fact to build and administer one of the most powerful and influential religious orders of the Middle Ages.

Rewriting the history of the Twelfth Century

The commonly held view of the creation of the Cistercian Order has several cherished elements: a foundation date for the order in the early 1100s during the lifetime of Bernard of Clairvaux; the rapid spread of this novel form of monasticism based on 'apostolic gestation' (a mother abbey sends out an abbot and 6 or 12 monks to found a new abbey); the settlement of new abbeys in the waste and disused lands of Europe; strong central control by the General Chapter; and the almost complete lack of women's foundations in the early Cistercian Order.
This well written volume turns this potted history on its head. The author re-examines the earliest foundation documents of the Order and individual monasteries in southern France to compose an entirely different history of the Order's early years. The concept of the Order itself was not invented until after Bernard's death and the General Chapter did not exert control until the last third of the Twelfth Century. In a far cry from the traditional history, the author finds evidence that the Order spread primarily by incorporating pre-existing foundations including many double houses as well as women's foundations. The incorporation of pre-existing monastic communities certainly better explains the Cistercian's amazingly rapid spread and success. Instead of colonizing the wastelands of Europe, the Order took over areas already under cultivation.
There are more surprises in this volume besides those mentioned above. The concepts of equality and charity, exemption from tithes, and other cherished myths of the Order are scrutinized using primary documents. The book focuses primarily on southern France, the cradle of the Cistercians, and deals extensively with women's monasteries and the Cistercian's foundation myth's silence about them.
An excellent read and an essential book for anyone interested in the history of the Twelfth Century or the Cistercians.

About the Author

Ivan E. Sutherland, a vice president and fellow at Sun Microsystems, received the Turing Award and the Von Neumann Medal for his pioneering contributions in the fields of computer graphics and microelectronic design.

Robert F. Sproull is an internationally noted expert on the design of graphics hardware and software. He too is a vice president and fellow at Sun.

David Money Harris is an associate professor of engineering at Harvey Mudd College. He received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Stanford University and his M.Eng. in electrical engineering and computer science from MIT. Before attending Stanford, he worked at Intel as a logic and circuit designer on the Itanium and Pentium II processors. Since then, he has consulted at Sun Microsystems, Hewlett-Packard, Evans & Sutherland, and other design companies.

David’s passions include teaching, building chips, and exploring the outdoors. When he is not at work, he can usually be found hiking, mountaineering, or rock climbing. He particularly enjoys hiking with his son, Abraham, who was born at the start of this book project. David holds about a dozen patents and is the author of three other textbooks on chip design, as well as two guidebooks to the Southern California mountains.

Had to buy this book

I am currently doing a Masters degree in VLSI, and although this is not on the required book list, after trying endless parametric simulations of critical path device sizes, and trying to find the minimum delay, I found Logical efforts to be a much more elegant approach to doing that. Although some other books discuss it in minimal detail, there is no mention of if the same can be extended to other logic families other than Static CMOS. I went through a few pages of the book, and decide it to be a must buy. I also thought it was pretty cheap for 60$. Unfortunately, the book is pretty small - it's not like a 500 page book which I was expecting it to be.

I am yet to read through the whole book (which I plan to - very soon), and shall update this review once I am done with that. But I am expecting it to be worth the every cent I paid for it.

A very good book for designers or advanced students

This book is a long overdue explanation of the "Logical Effort" approach to MOS circuit design invented by two of the authors, Sutherland and Sproull, in the late 80's. The technique presented is complete and powerful, and this book should be required reading for all persons involved in high-performance or low-power MOS digital design. Nevertheless, I would not recommend it for beginners without some of what the authors call "instruction from veteran designers." The main shortcoming of the book is a lack of organization---important points are sometimes made in seemingly unrelated sections, and the sections themselves do not always appear to follow the most logical arrangement---and it could stand a more thorough editing job to clean up some of the presentation. Sometimes, I felt that information that was presented in charts would have been much more powerful in graph form. A few of the graphs in the book are misleading (arbitrary scales and unmarked breaks in scales), and some of the mathematical terminology is imprecise. The fact that the authors picked, somewhat arbitrarily, a new definition of the technology delay parameter tau (instead of sticking to the definition established by Mead & Conway in their 1980 book) is annoying. Aspiring asynchronous designers should be cautioned that the two designs for an n-input Muller C-element contrasted in Section 11.2 are logically different. A section contrasting the uses of the logical effort method in synchronous and asynchronous designs would also be welcome. All in all, however, the book is very readable, and it is easy to follow. It would be effective as a textbook, and it is a most welcome addition to my library because it treats a difficult and important topic better and in more detail than any other published work.

Blown away

This is without a doubt a must-have for CMOS logic and circuit designers. No doubt this will be on my desk for the forseeable future. The first two chapters present a basic introduction to the approach that is sufficient to gain a working knowledge. The remaining chapters delve into details such as applying the method to domino circuits, passgate logic, cells with unequal rise/fall times, and a complete derivation of the method. The authors are well known experts in the field of high speed circuit design, and David Harris' presentation of the material is far from bland and boring. This is one of the few technical books I had a hard time putting down. Highly recommended!
