Not Stupid by Any Means...Gems for Life

Mr. Ofili has written a gem of a book filled with pearls of wisdom. He shares with readers 18 ways to have a better life by making the right choices. His conclusions are underscored by news stories, anecdotes, and moments from his own life when he realized that he was doing something wrong and that there was a better way to handle the situation.

I appreciate how candidly he drew from his own experiences and lightened up the book with humor. I enjoyed his funny and telling sketches to illustrate (literally) his points. I liked the stories that tackled tough issues, from growing up in another culture, racism, a tendency to overanalyze, and financial challenges, among others. While the life's lessons the author shared are grounded in common sense, he packaged them in an easy-to-read, thought-provoking book. His stories made me want to know more about his personal life, but I'll have to wait for him to share more if he writes a follow-on book.

If there's any reason to give this book 4 out of 5 stars, it's because it ends before you know it, and the wisdom he imparts is quite fleeting. It's not the kind of book that those seeking help to change their own lives can rely on for solid advice. The author does not take enough time to help the reader apply it to their own lives or even sink in. It's a great read for what it offers. His advice might not be equally applicable to all, but he left it up to readers to decide if they agree with his advice. Not everyone is an engineer or has an engineer's mind (myself included), but his anecdotes cut across a wide demographic.

I recommend this book to anyone who prefers to learn life's lessons from others than the hard way -- on their own.

This isn't a self help book, but it sure gives you a lot of help!!!! The authors narration of his personal experiences gives one a lot to think about. A very good read, well written and it can save your life too.

Unnecessarily complicated in parts

Has good information. It is written by someone who is very familiar with the subject, but oriented somewhat to trainee electricians taking exams, rather than the DIY person. The kindle version was fine for the diagrams which are usually a problem on that format. It doesn't have a lot of info about lighting.

OK book, but could not recommend it for DIY.

Olga Munari Assaly was diagnosed with breast cancer in April of 2006 and now considers her life's passion to make a difference in just one person's life. Olga and her husband, Leonard, have three children and live in Canada. Olga's proceeds from The Joy of Cancer will be donated to breast cancer research. Amazing Inspirational Story

As someone who lived through a family member being diagnosed with breast cancer, this book was inspiration and so truthful. It brings new light to something that is usually seen so negatively. Having a positive outlook is half the battle, Olga has taught me so much through book! Definitely a must read. This book is filled with inspiration.

One summer Wednesday night, a little over a year ago, a woman walked into our Pointe-Claire Toastmasters Club as a guest and instantly changed the aura of the room. Her effervescence, her poise, and her clear blue beautiful eyes radiated strength and confidence and determination that I would come to think of as the `Olga Factor'. That was my first meeting with Olga Munari Assaly.

She had come to practice her skills as a speaker, especially in English, as her mother tongue was French and she was expanding her horizons. Over the months that went by, we learned that Olga was preparing to put out a book about her cancer experience. Since I had my first book published the year before, I was excited for my new friend. If the book was anything like her personality, then for sure it would be dynamic. Being mostly French, Olga solicited the help of Kim Mecca to help her write it. This book reflects Kim as an artist coming into her own as a painter of Olga's story. While it is true that Olga offers a rich palette of colour and experience for which to paint with, Kim's choices of texture, shadow and light, were her own, and she captured Olga essence with mastery. Olga's story is one that anyone facing a hardship should sit down and read in one sitting.

The title, The Joy of Cancer, is as bold and challenging as Olga herself. I can only imagine the certain percentage of people out there that will react to the title with emotions ranging from astonishment to anger. But Olga is unapologetic, and those of you who venture through her story will hopefully understand that it could not have been named anything else. To quote Chuck Swindoll - "Life is 10% of What Happens to Me and 90% of How I React to It" That may be more acceptable than the more vernacular "s*** happens", but both quotes make it quite clear that life has its unexpected turns and if you are not prepared to steer those curves, you may crash and burn before your time. Olga had no intentions of doing so.

As Kim recounts, this woman who had spent most of her life in self-doubt and insecurity took her diagnosis of cancer and spun it around her like a chrysalis, and then emerged as a transformed butterfly.

Those of you, who would contend that the title might have been different if the cancer treatment didn't go well, would be missing the point. It was not the end result that brought the joy, rather the journey of self-discovery Olga yearned for her wings and refused the diagnosis of caterpillar.

She took charge of her treatment and understood that the doctors were wise facilitators of her treatment, not in charge of her destiny.

This is the story of a woman, whom, while still undergoing treatment, walked in The Weekend to End Breast Cancer. Not only did she walk in it, but managed to become the biggest fund raiser for the event. This once self-effacing individual gave the opening address to the event, and then did radio and television appearances, and became a major force in the awareness of breast cancer in Montreal.

This story is well crafted by Kim Mecca, and as she recounts her own personal loss of a friend to the same disease, Olga came along, I believe to give her the chance to honour her friend and Olga at the same time by telling Olga's story with compassion, reverence, and a dash of pride.

While this is a book may seem to be about cancer, it is not. It is about what happens when any major adversity hits you. The decisions you make, the attitude you foster, and your choice to win or lose are all up to you. It is a book about love and family, support. The journey that Olga took, she did not take alone, and her children and husband, Leonard, travelled with her. They all made choices. The right choices can transform you; the wrong ones can slay you. The Joy of Cancer is a book about making the right choices.

Interesting in the beginning but most of it contained unconvincing logic.

It was fairly good at the beginning but when the author didn't reveal anything I didn't already know or thought, I lost interest because his logic didn't convince me to change my views of simple questions of translation errors in the Bible.

He did, however, raise lots of previously considered thoughts into the front of my mind about how so many churches try to take control of a person's mind which, in my view means they have ulterior motives of either getting and holding power over the people to get money. I've visited a number of churches and I've never run across one that didn't very nearly coerce the people for money some with promises of "salvation," fellowship or promises of sin forgiveness. The more money the person gives, the greater the so called 'benefit.' One church I went to promised a better place in the hereafter for much larger sums of money. I call it religious blackmail, if you don't give money, you will suffer.

Fantastic Book

This is a fantastic book. The authors really prove their arguments with scripture, logic, and common sense. We have been programmed and coerced in our Churches and our government. It is time to take back what we have lost and reassert our own independence. I don't want to give away the ending(s), it is life-changing. This is a milestone book that will define how we look at the 2nd coming of christ (or the lack thereof). I would highly suggest this book to anyone who cares about their religious, financial and political freedom.
