About the Author
Ray L. Birdwhistel, an anthropologist and expert on how people communicate with body motions, retired in 1988 from the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania, where he joined the faculty in 1969. From 1942 until 1969 he taught and did research at the Universities of Toronto and Louisville, the State University of New York at Buffalo and Temple University.

Primary text for nonverbal communication research, good (and/or necessary) if you are into this stuff and need to do your research. Otherwise, the language and data are getting a bit outdated. Goes into detail on some things that most nonverbal texts don't address, which suggests it was written to be more comprehensive or was created prior to a splintering of the subfields. Definitely informative and interesting.

Better than Stewart's book... In fact, the best!

I've used both Stewart's Calculus and Thomas'. Interestingly, Thomas has been writing calculus books for a LONG time and i've picked up several editions in the used book stores, because from the first time i bought a Thomas calc book back in Jr. High for my own self interest, i was a fan of his style.
His style is that of the old-school American text book authors who wrote in a clear, concise manner of English, using tangible and visual examples. Those old writers still thought of much of the material as novel, and were appealing to a more agrarian society of students.. especially the young and booming field of engineers. This is lacking in today's texts. The only drawback is that some old texts are much too impersonal and use the passive voice for everything, which can make them very difficult to read at times.
Thomas' recent editions (at least - i can not recall for the 60's era editions) are not only formally clear, but easy to understand and read. Here are the ways in which Thomas' book beats Stewart's book:
1) His explanations are accompanied by better graphics. Thomas uses more graphics to show each example and derivation. He uses MULTIPLE frames of graphics for one example, instead of just a single graphic. This makes following his train of thought much easier.. it's almost like watching a video.
2) His writing style is more complete. He leaves out fewer ideas than Stewart. Sometimes Stewart, like most authors, forgets to mention what exactly he is thinking and the reader is left trying to figure out his train of thought.
3) Thomas guides the reader through more (graphical) derivation of concepts. Sometimes, you will find derivations which Stewart relegates to problems for the reader (don't you hate that!?), are actually shown visually by Thomas!
Thomas' book is in fact probably the best calculus textbook around. I've looked at many many of them, and fraknly, none of them are this complete and well developed... The funny thing is, Thomas' book was one of the best decades ago. It has only gotten more exhaustive and more mature!
You should have this book in your reference library at least. You are more likely to find illustrative discussion on any particular introductory calculus subject in this book than you are in other books.

I had edition 6e for cal 1 and recently purchased this edition
for cal 2. This version is much better. People who already know
calculus tell me how great edition 6e is, but the problem is that
this textbook is intended for 18-20 year olds(for the most part)
who are only being exposed to calculus for their first or second
time. 6e examples skip alot of algebraic manipulations which
can have you struggling for days, only to find out that you missed
something basic, the 12th edition fixed alot of those problems. Also in
6e the excerises at the end of the chapters will have a few equations and
then kill you with word problems,this is a problem for me because I consider
myself a mathlete and I enjoy solving equations. I understand they want you to be able to analyze and not just go through the steps, but at least put some equations in there. To sum up,the 12th edition is way more user/beginner friendly than 6e.

An Excellent Text

I used this book through three semesters of Calculus and feel like it was very understandable and taught me a great deal. It can definitely feel dry at times but it's not meant to entertain you anyway. The examples were clear and built you up to the tougher exercises. It's worth every dollar spent and I'm confident you could get through calculus courses without a professor by self teaching yourself with Thomas.

About the Author
Alan Ayckbourn was born in London in 1939 to a violinist father and a mother who was a writer. He left school at seventeen with two 'A' levels and went straight into the theatre. Two years in regional theatre as an actor and stage manager led in 1959 to the writing of his first play, The Square Cat, for Scarborough's Theatre in the Round at the instigation of his then employer and subsequent mentor, Stephen Joseph. Some 75 plays later, his work has been translated into over 35 languages, is performed on stage and television throughout the world and has won countless awards. There have been English and French screen adaptations, the most notable being Alain Resnais' fine film of Private Fears in Public Places. Major successes include Relatively Speaking, How the Other Half Loves, Absurd Person Singular, Bedroom Farce, A Chorus of Disapproval, The Norman Conquests, A Small Family Business, Henceforward ..., Comic Potential, Things We Do For Love, and Life of Riley. Surprises was first presented at the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough, and subsequently at the the Minerva Theatre, Chichester in 2012. In 2009, he retired as Artistic Director of the Stephen Joseph Theatre, where almost all his plays have been and continue to be first staged, after 37 years in the post. Knighted in 1997 for services to the theatre, he received the 2010 Critics' Circle Award for Services to the Arts and became the first British playwright to receive both Olivier and Tony Special Lifetime Achievement Awards.

When Crabb disappeared in 1956 while diving under a Russian warship in Portsmouth, England, Pendock became the focus of the security service because of Crabb's connection to the head of the Royal Navy, Lord Mountbatten. It had been a great adventure, but in the end, they knew too much. Britain had long been a hotbed of spies, defectors, and coverups to such an extent that it has become very difficult to determine fact from fiction. The world of spies, defectors, traitors, and the Establishment is a murky and dirty one. However, one fact that provides the foundation for this book is that the official record about Crabb's last dive in Portsmouth is held under the onehundredyear secrecy rule. This means that the facts might be revealed in 2056. This story, although a novel, is based on facts and information provided by witnesses to events and is the inside story.

Mike and Jacqui Welham have published books with mainstream publishers and haven been commissioned to write specialist nonfiction works as well as a growing list of conspiracy novels. They are best known for their research, which began in the 1980s, into the life of Commander L. K. P. Crabb, a British frogman who disappeared on a spying mission under a Russian warship in Portsmouth, England, in 1956. That culminated into their two books, Frogman Spy and The Crabb Enigma. Then the story reinvented itself following contact with family members of Maitland Pendock, Crabb's best friend and fellow spy. This is more than a novel, it is an important social history during the uncertainties of the deepening of the Cold War in the post Stalin period. To youths of my generation Buster Crabb was our hero, along with the Test Pilots and Sports champions of the day. I recall following the disappearance of Crabb in the newspapers. The authors have made Crabb the subject of three books and as a result of fresh information coming to them - along with Crabb’s hitherto missing swordstick have written this fact based fictional account of what actually happened to Crabb after his final dive in Portsmouth in 1956 - and a very plausible end result they have adduced. The full circumstances of that last dive currently held in public records will not be made available to the public until 2056 - such is the gravity of those circumstances that may- as the Welhams suggest - involve high placed persons in the establishment of the day.
This is, however, not so much another book about Crabb, but more about his long-term relationship with a minor member of the Ministry of Information, Maitland Pendock - a man interested in the arts. It is from Pendock’s family that the authors obtained their fresh information.
It is difficult to determine where the boundaries lie between fact and fiction. The work has been skilfully produced to weave a coherent tale- even to the point of formatting the internal layout in the block text of reference books. Obviously the dialogues cannot be accurate, even if the content material might be accurately deduced. As a criticism, I found the dialogues occasionally lacking in veracity asking myself whether ‘people talked like that?’ The reader is advised to consult page 423 where a summary of the real people behind the story is given to help one separate fact from fiction. Until I read this page I was convinced that Pendock’s Irish adventure was fictional. The author’s have kept faith with chronology throughout the tale/story ( you choose which - tale for fiction, story for fact). The book is not, a dry history book, but a moving and enjoyable novel that I recommend to anybody with an interest in the espionage ridden days of the Cold War or of Buster Crabb.

A real mystery!

Fact, fiction or fantasy? In this story the lines are blurred - quite deliberately given that the "truth" may never be revealed and even under the 100 secrecy rule, official documents may still not reveal what really happened to Crabb and Pendock. The book is well written and shows clear evidence of meticulous research. Contemporary events such as the Portland Spy Ring and suspicions over Kim Philby are all interwoven into the plot. An accurate spy story with twists and turns or historical fiction? You decide as this book is full of period detail and an enjoyable page-turner.

I really enjoyed this, another well written book by Mike & Jacqui Welham that goes deep into the lives of those involved in the Crabb affair. A real eye-opener into what really went on within the intelligence agencies. I hope to still be around when the 100 year official secrets act reaches an end concerning this case and more truths are revealed! A highly recommended book.
