Kevin was a troubled kid with residual demons from living two separate lives torn between his parents' divorce. Battling with drinking and drugs throughout high school and what became a short-lived college career, Kevin made a string of poor choices that landed him in jail for his final DUI, which also resulted in the death of his best friend, Tim. Hanging onto hope through his sentence, his rehab and his grieving, Kevin wrote Standing With Hope In My Eyes as a means of reaching others facing difficult, sometimes unbearable times.

Great book! Tells about a life of pain

Great book! Tells about a life of pain, uncertainty, destruction, tragedy, recovery and redemption. This is a book that today's youth can relate to and it gives hope to millions more who are heading down the same destructive path. A young mans journey thru the beginnings of life and hopes for the role model he can be. There will, one day, be a follow up book of victory and glory.

Teased by the other players for being the new guy, the boy is pleased when he has a "perfect" second half of a game, scoring a goal, although he's disappointed that his dad isn't there to watch. The pictures shift from the soccer field to the boy's bedroom, filled with soccer photographs, where the boy dreams of the future. These photographs mirror the action in the next set of illustrations, which show the boy's fantasies, as he plays in the final game of the World Cup; this time, of course, Dad is there. Foreman's language is appealingly simple, and the large, evocative watercolors add to the dreamlike quality, with details such as clouds that resemble players in action. Endpapers feature watercolor sketches of soccer being played throughout the world. A loving tribute to what the English call the "beautiful game." Todd Morning

3 1/2 Exciting Soccer Drama, But Slightly Confusing

With the Cup being played this year, Americans will once again renew their tenuous relationship with soccer. For some kids and adults, however, soccer is an enduring love, and they're just as enthusiastic--if not as rich in tradition, as their soccer-loving counterparts in other countries. Michael's Foreman's imaginative (both literally and figuratively) text and witty illustrations convey how children everywhere dream of attaining big goals (pun intended).

Foreman opens with a scene of a gigantic, dream-like soccer field, with hundreds playing on what looks like several square miles of turf. Our unnamed hero suffers a small practical joke from his teammates, but his on-field heroics quiet them until... he wakes up.

Or does he? It becomes somewhat confusing at this point, as Foreman overreaches in his blend of the past and the future, the longings of the boy and his father. The scenes seem to switch from dream to--perhaps the boy grown up?-- playing in a stadium in front of tens of thousands of international soccer fans. The story uses the cliche of the father too busy to see his son's big goal, except we are told that "his dad usually came to all the games." That doesn't seem so bad, but, after the boy shoots "the first goal of the Final" (either in his dream, or later as an adult, or with his real team in the present--I'm not sure), we're told, "And this time--this [italics added] this time, his dad was there to see it.

After he scores that tremendous goal ("The vast crowd erupted. He had hit another wonder goal!")in the huge stadium, we get an equally confusing statement: "Just like the goal he had scored all those years before on that freezing boyhood Sunday." This must refer to the "cold" day that opens the book; however, that soccer game is interrupted by a dream, or (more probably) an image of his father when he was a boy, and his father's similar soccer hopes and dreams.

OK, so maybe it doesn't matter that the text is somewhat confusing. Perhaps some would argue that the author masterfully switches point of view and timeframe. I think, however, that the cinematic shifts in time and narrator will confuse much of the book's intended audience. I like the range of emotions here, the context, the wit and intelligence, and the vivid, imaginative pictures, but a slightly simpler book may have been more effective.

Good for Introducing Big Goals

I agree with the reviewer who said the story was "confusing." I intend to use it as a read-aloud to introduce my class' big goals for the year, as I am a 5th grade teacher in New York. However, upon delving into the story, I, too, could not figure out if the boy was really playing in the World Cup final or just dreaming about it. I did not get in which game he was actually scoring a goal. Of course, the point is that everyone can have big goals and dreams, and see them to reality if they persevere. Hopefully, I can elicit student reactions without getting bogged down with the text. I can probably spur on some interesting discussion among students as to what the author's intentions were. I would welcome others' suggestions on 5th grade level books to share or read independently.

the greatest novel of the 20th Century?

This novel was first published in the 1930s and it is a measure of the author's achievement that it still reads wonderfully today. The story has a breadth to it that amazes me, and a cast of memorable characters that linger in the memory. I love it!
It is set in an English mining town over a number of years before and after the First World War. It follows the fortunes (and misfortunes) of several families, from the wealthy mineowner's, to a humble family where the father and three sons are all miners. There are some wonderfully drawn characters, some doses of realism that shock the reader, and some moving passages which bring tears to your eyes. But there's nothing cliched or sentimental about the book, so if you like television mini-series or the kind of 'feel good' romantic stories that Hollywood specialises in, this is not for you.
But if you want a taste of real life from nearly a 100 years ago, written by an author who was there (he was a doctor in a mining village for a time and many of his books come from out of his medical background) then this is the book for you. Get Amazon to find you a copy!
I sum up this novel to friends by saying it is so great an achievement that I feel it could only have been written by God. I'm probably the only person who thinks so, but perhaps it really is the greatest novel of the 20th Century.

Nice Guys Finish Last

With apologies to Mr. Lusby, below, who apparently sees Marxists under his bed, this is as lovely a literary jewel as every other story that sprang whole and breathing from this wonderful author. I will concede that Cronin's novels have a common thread: the hero or main character usually gets what it was he thought he wanted in the end, but by that time it has cost him everything else and his life lies in ruins. Far from being shallow and two-dimensional, Cronin's characters are so real and human in their weakness, shallow cruelty and avarice that you can almost smell their sweat in the room. Another beautiful Cronin novel that I did not see listed here among his works is, "The Northern Light".

Cronin's novels evidently mean something different to each reader, but to me they warn that it is dangerous to want too much for yourself, when winning might turn in your fist like a knife and take away everything you love. "The Stars Look Down" is no exception.

Having been a miner for many years and a member of the Mines Rescue,this book and the film is very true to form.The miners houses also bring memories back-although the family members in the film were very fortunate, as my miners house was oneup and one down with the cold water tap outside by the door- the toilet was at the bottom of the garden and was shared.
My father was killed along with another 265 in the Gresford pit disaster of 1934.
I have many stories to tell- but no one believes them anymore--it was a hard working life but the comradeship was beyond belief-friends were for life.Peterblondy.

Well worth a read!

"Human Capital Analytics" is the sort of book I've been looking for a long time. It combines a good business overview of HR issues with specific, actionable steps to studying issues in my company. The "how you do it" part seems to be skipped in the books I've read. The case studies are excellent, drawn from actual companies, not the "ABC Company" type stuff that you usually get, and the advice on how to actually get the data, clean it up, and analyze alone makes the book worth getting. The math sections point out how to wade through things like regression and find the one or two numbers that you actually should care about. The section about how to present the results, giving tips on charts, what kinds of documents to write, etc., seems pretty useful, although I haven't gotten that far in my own work. Well worth a read!
